It's hard to believe but we've just about made it to baseball season. The Orioles will start reporting to spring training today and in just a few short days, we'll be under way. There are a number of things to watch for this year, not least of which will be whether catcher Adley Rutschman looks to be back in form. He'll be a major catalyst for the Orioles offense in 2025 and the team needs him back to full strength if they want to capture what's sure to be a tightly contested AL East this year.
There's also the question of whether the Orioles' rotation will be good enough after the departure of ace Corbin Burnes, who signed a free agent deal with the Diamondbacks earlier this winter. The group does have some interesting pieces, including the masterful Grayson Rodriguez. The young righty has big shoes to fill, but we've seen enough evidence that he's capable of handling the job that we're confident heading into 2025 with him atop the rotation.
But when will we get to see the Orioles finally take the field? And when will games get under way? After all, pitchers and catchers reporting to spring training is a critical date on the calendar but there's only so much that can do to hold our attention. What we really want is to see the Orioles take the field for the first time, and it can't come soon enough.
When do the Orioles' pitchers and catchers report to spring training?
Baltimore Orioles pitchers and catchers will report to spring training today, Wednesday February 12. The group won't officially start working out until Thursday, but they'll be in attendance by this morning. The group will have roughly a week to get things rolling before the rest of the team joins them.
When is the Orioles' first full squad workout?
The first full squad workout will take place on Tuesday, February 18. Like with pitchers and catchers, it's possible that we'll see a number of these guys show up early. As we all know, the 2024 season didn't end the way we wanted it to. This group of Orioles are surely going to come into camp motivated and looking to put 2024 behind them. I wouldn't put it past any of the returning O's players to come in with a chip on their shoulder and ready to work.
Where does Orioles spring training take place?
The Orioles have called Sarasota, Florida their spring training home for 16 years. This will be the 15th year they've done so at Ed Smith Stadium. While it's no Camden Yards, Ed Smith Stadium is a genuinely great place to take in a game. Tickets are generally relatively inexpensive and can be accessed through the Orioles' website here. Tickets can also be purchased from the box office at Ed Smith Stadium, which is open Monday through Friday from 10am to 3pm EST.
When is the first Orioles spring training game of 2025?
The first game of the 2025 spring training season will take place on Saturday, February 22 against the Pirates. The Orioles have 31 games on the schedule this spring, which includes two split squad games, against the Twins and the Phillies. The Orioles will also take part in the second annual Spring Breakout series with a game against the Yankees, in which we'll see the two sides' top prospects square off against one another. The final spring training game is scheduled for Sunday, March 23. The Orioles will take a few days off while traveling back to Toronto for Opening Day on Thursday, March 27.
