Baltimore Orioles fans are hoping to put the 2025 season behind them as quickly as possible, and it would seem the first step would be hiring a new manager. From there, roster construction will be the key as the Orioles look to stabilize a pitching staff that has been broken since last spring training and hopefully add an impact hitter.
The issue for the Orioles is that they likely won't have the urgency to address those needs in free agency. It would be easy to point to Framber Valdez and Cody Bellinger in the free-agent market and call it a day, but Mike Elias and Co. likely don't have the approval for that type of spending. The Orioles will need to get creative in addressing their needs this offseason, and it could mean circling back to targets they've had in the past.
This exercise is perfect for the time between the World Series and Hot Stove season, as Orioles fans all have their GM hats on--and honestly, there usually is a joke to be made here. However, Elias' decisions over the past year are already an outdated comedy routine. So that leaves us here, wondering if Elias' regret may lead him back to a target he has chased before.
These previous Orioles' targets that could be in play this offseason
Mitch Keller, Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher
There were a number of contenders interested in Mitch Keller ahead of the MLB trade deadline, but it was the Orioles who reportedly made the strongest push. The circumstances surrounding the Pittsburgh Pirates haven't changed (they haven't for the last decade), and it would stand to reason that Keller will be on the trade market this winter. He may be the most affordable option for the Orioles, considering there hasn't been a rush from the front office to move their top prospects.
Nathan Eovaldi, Texas Rangers pitcher
The Orioles are in a prime position for teams looking to trade from their surplus of starting pitchers in order to address their need for offense. It's why a trade for Hunter Greene would be the home-run move of the offseason. A similar type of move may be Nathan Eovaldi if the Texas Rangers make him available this offseason. The Rangers need to reshape the look of their offense, and there could be a trade fit with the Orioles, who had an interest in Eovaldi last offseason.
Sandy Alcantara, Miami Marlins pitcher
Yes, there is a theme with these targets in that they are all pitchers, but as of now, there's a clearer sense of who the pitchers are that will be available in the trade market this offseason. Pitching is the biggest need the Orioles have. Sandy Alcantara looked to regain his Cy Young form towards the end of the 2025 season, and the expectation is that the Miami Marlins will make him available this offseason. The Orioles checked in at the deadline and should be near the top of his list of suitors this winter.
