Two Baltimore Orioles teams were in the second Dream Bracket tournament, and now there is only one.

The 1970 Baltimore Orioles are moving on in the Region-One AL side of the bracket. In the Region Two portion of the bracket, the 1983 Orioles lost to the 2002 Anaheim Angels.

The 1970s team defeated the tough 1995 Seattle Mariners. The simulated games are being played on MLB’s Out of the Park Baseball game. The two Orioles teams played a combined 13 games. The ’83 team lost in the seventh game, and the ’70 team only needed six games to defeat the Mariners.

These virtual games are different than the Players’ Tournament that ended a few weeks ago. These simulated games are played on a PC and include all post-WWII teams. Unfortunately, fans aren’t told who is playing the simulated games. This takes some of the fun out of the tournament, especially after being able to watch player representatives like Dwight Smith Jr.and Nico Goodrum trash talk each other on their Twitch accounts.

The 1970s team had a relatively easy time with the 1995 Mariners. The scores were:

  • Game 1: SEA 5, BAL 0
  • Game 2: BAL 4, SEA 0
  • Game 3: BAL 4, SEA 3
  • Game 4: SEA 3, BAL 2
  • Game 5: BAL 13, SEA 3
  • Game 6: BAL 9, SEA 2

Even with hitters like Ken Griffey Jr. Edgar Martinez, and Alex Rodriguez, the Mariners were no match for the 70s Orioles. Randy Johnson pitched in the first game, and only gave up two hits. Jim Palmer wasn’t much competition for the Big Unit (but most pitchers weren’t much competition for the five-time Cy-Young winner.

But, after Johnson, the Mariners didn’t have much to give to the O’s. And, when Johnson returned to the mound in Game 5, the O’s had him figured out and the team scored 5 of their 13 runs off of him. I guess even the best of the best can have a bad day in a simulated game.

The Orioles offense in all six games was led by players like Frank Robinson, Boog Powell, Davey Johnson, and Brooks Robinson. You can see the box scores here.

On the flip side, the ’83 team did not fare as well. These are the scores against the ’02 Angels:

  • Game 1: BAL 8, ANA 2
  • Game 2: ANA 7, BAL 6
  • Game 3: BAL 6, ANA 4
  • Game 4: ANA 4, BAL 3
  • Game 5: ANA 3, BAL 1
  • Game 6: BAL 5, ANA 1
  • Game 7: ANA 4, BAL 2

In those games, Cal Ripken Jr.earned hits in all but two of them. In game three, the Iron Man went 2-4 with a double and a home run. And, in the same game Eddie Murray went 3-4. This would have been a fun game to watch unfold – if it were a real one.

Mike Boddicker led the pitching staff. In the two games he started, he gave up only two runs and ended up with an ERA of 1.32. You can see the box scores to all seven games here.
