Two Baltimore Orioles prospects have been named Arizona Fall League Fall Stars.

May the honors and accolades continue to roll in for Baltimore Orioles prospects this season. On Tuesday afternoon, the Arizona Fall League announced their rosters for the 2019 Fall Stars game which features two Baltimore Orioles Top 30 prospects.

This year’s contest is scheduled for Saturday, October 12th, and can be seen on the MLB Network at 8 pm EST. Representing the Orioles are RHP Dean Kremer and IF Mason McCoy, the 8th and 24th ranked prospects in Baltimore’s system, respectively.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Mason McCoy ranks as one of the top hitters among Surprise Saguaros hitters, slashing .300/..417/.400 with one double, one triple, and an 8/6 K/BB ratio. He’s also added a stolen base.

McCoy, 24, has quickly worked his way through the organization since the Orioles used a sixth-round draft pick on him out of Iowa back in 2017. He spent just 27 games in High-A with the Frederick Keys, hitting .379 with a .975 OPS before his promotion to Double-A Bowie.

With the Baysox, McCoy hit .266 with 13 doubles, and seven triples in 105 games, showing off his ability to be tough out at the plate. He was also successful in 10 of his 13 stolen base attempts.

What he lacks in power, McCoy makes up for in his ability to find the gaps and use the entire field. His biggest asset just may be his defense, where he has the ability to stick at shortstop at the major league level.

The former Iowa Hawkeye will likely make his major league debut in late-2020, sooner if the Baltimore Orioles decide to move on from Jonathan Villar. McCoy has been my guy to watch since he joined the Orioles, due to his history of producing hits at every level of baseball he’s played at. It may not be long before he gets the opportunity to prove he can do the same at the major league level.

Joining McCoy in the Arizona Fall League Fall Stars game is RHP Dean Kremer. One of the top strikeout artists in minor league baseball, Kremer has fanned 10 in his nine AFL innings this season, giving up just two earned runs on five hits and two walks along the way (2.00 ERA, 0.78 WHIP).

Kremer wasn’t the cornerstone piece of the Manny Machado trade last season, but he could produce the highest value of everyone who came over. Making 21 starts between AA and AAA, Kremer recorded 122 strikeouts in 113 innings, posting a 3.72 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, and a .258 average against. Those numbers include four rough starts in his first AAA experience which saw Kremer give up 19 runs on 30 hits in 19 innings.

A 14th-round pick of the Dodgers back in 2016, Kremer is Rule 5 draft-eligible and is sure to be protected on the 40-man roster in the coming weeks. By the end of the 2020 season, Kremer will likely find his way onto the major league roster, joining LHP Keegan Akin as the first of a growing list of exciting pitching prospects to make their way to Camden Yards over the next few years.
