Turns out, things can get worse for the Baltimore Orioles.

Just when you thought things could not get worse for the Baltimore Orioles, Wednesday afternoon’s series finale against the Oakland A’s happened. In the top of the first inning, first baseman Trey Mancini was hit by a 92 mph pitch out of the hand of A’s starter Chris Bassitt.

Mancini was hit in the elbow and was immediately removed from the game and replaced by Chris Davis. No additional information has been released on the severity of Mancini’s injury.

Update: Since the original publishing of this piece, x-rays came back negative and Mancini is considered day-to-day.

After a down sophomore season with the Baltimore Orioles, Mancini has been the undeniable leader of this lineup throughout the season. Entering Wednesday’s game, the 27-year-old outfielder/first baseman was slashing .304/.359/.558 with 16 home runs, 35 runs driven in, and 50 runs scored. His 1.7 fWAR not only leads the Orioles, but it matches his rookie year total, which saw him finish third in American League Rookie of the Year voting.

More from Birds Watcher

It’s been widely assumed that Mancini would be the lone All-Star representative for the 2019 Baltimore Orioles, despite attempts on social media to get out the vote in Birdland not garnering much traction in the on-going voting process.

While I’m personally not concerned with all-star festivities and have no interest in learning the new voting process that Major League Baseball has instituted, the one player from each team policy is still in place and no one on the current roster has outperformed Boom Boom.

The optics of the injury weren’t great, which is worrisome. Until an official update is provided by the team, all fans can do is hope for the best. Debate has swirled around Mancini’s future with the organization and is picking up steam as the trade deadline looms. A serious injury to Mancini will surely put that debate to bed, unfortunately.

Story will be updated as more official details are released. At the time of posting, the Orioles and A’s are tied at 0-0 in the third inning. Jimmy Yacabonis got the start and has worked two scoreless frames, allowing just one hit and striking out one.
