There is no doubt that the weather continues to prove it is a long way off from the start of the Baltimore Orioles baseball season.

But, even though the Baltimore Orioles season doesn’t officially start for another 80 days, Adam Jones is getting involved in helping the fanbase.

The youngest residents of Baltimore have been struggling with the cold, especially in their classrooms in the Baltimore City Public Schools. Jones has supported the efforts of Aaron Maybin, former NFL player, as he attempts to raise money to pay for heat in the frigid classroom. He is working hard to get coats and winter gear for kids all over town.

Jones’s Tweet from January 3 was in support of Maybin’s drive to help the very kids that he works with in his classroom. Images of school children in their winter coats and hats in the Baltimore classrooms have flooded social media to get support for the inadequate and outdated heating systems that plague the schools.

Maybin is not only a teacher in the school district, but he also graduated from Baltimore City Schools. He went on to attend Penn State University. He was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 2009 where he played for two seasons before being traded to the New York Jets. By the age of 25, Maybin was done with his football career and he became a teacher.

And, he is using his celebrity to garner attention for the children in Baltimore. He and Samierra Jones, another Baltimore City Schools graduate, have created a Go Fund Me account to raise money to buy space heaters and winter coats for the children who are underserved in these schools. The Go Fund Me page can be found here.

At the time of publishing, the pair has raised over $74,000. Their original goal was $20,000.

Maybin is also using Twitter to draw attention to the needs of the children in the community.

Yes, Birds Watcher is a page dedicated to the Baltimore Orioles, but once Adam Jones shared the information, the Orioles indirectly became involved. Education is always more important than sports, and helping children is of the utmost importance. Like Jones said: “Kids must become a priority.”

He’s correct.

If you are able to help, your help would be greatly appreciated. I, like Maybin, am a teacher in my “real life” and see the struggle of kids on a daily basis. For many, school is the safest place. It should also be a warm place.

Next: Happy Birthday, Kevin Gausman

The Orioles are an organization that is always giving back to the community. With the positive response that Maybin has received, it is clear that the Orioles are a true representation of a giving community.
