Baltimore Orioles fall in extras

Despite a fairly strong outing and another quality start for Kevin Gausman, the Baltimore Orioles fell to Toronto in extra innings last night.

If you’re the Baltimore Orioles and Kevin Gausman, you have to be thinking that all good things must come to an end this morning. Even winning streaks. Gausman turned in another quality start, yet couldn’t qualify for the win. Gausman’s line: 6.1 IP, 8 H, 3 R (2 earned), 2 BB, 4 K.

Some might look at Gausman’s performance last night and suggest that it wasn’t truly a “quality start.” However by definition, that’s exactly what it was. Gausman pitched a minimum of six innings and gave up the max of three runs.

The O’s trailed early when Donaldson hit an RBI-single in the last of the first. That however went as an unearned run against Gausman – and it was his own doing. He tried to pick the runner off of first, but and errant throw allowed the runner to get to second. Those things happen, but it put the Birds in an early hole.

Toronto extended their lead to 2-0 in the fourth when Saunders smacked a solo homer. The issue at this point was that the O’s were getting no-hit by Toronto’s Estrada, however that faded quickly as well. Jonathan Schoop got the Orioles on the board with a solo homer in the fifth. One inning later, the Birds had the lead at 3-2 as Chris Davis launched a two-run homer.

However in the last of that sixth inning Toronto tied the game on Martin’s RBI-single. And on we played into the later innings of the game. Mind you that the Orioles have more wins after the seventh inning than any other team in baseball. However unfortunately for them, you can’t win them all – regardless of when the go-ahead or winning run comes.

Encarnacion’s home run in the last of the tenth won the game for Toronto, snapping the Orioles’ five-game winning streak. However as I said, you just aren’t going to win them all. And that’s especially true in the AL East. As strong as the Orioles’ bullpen is, it’s also unrealistic to expect them never to yield a run – especially in extra innings. You just have to move on and try to start another winning streak the next day.
