The 2016 MLB Draft is coming up soon and will be held from June 9 to June 11.
Every June, the MLB Draft is held so that teams can draft prospects in order to improve their farm system short-term and potentially improve their major league team long-term. For teams like the Baltimore Orioles who don’t have the huge budgets of the Yankees, Red Sox, and Dodgers, the draft is extremely important because it’s their chance to not have to bid against those teams to get elite talent. This year, the draft will be held from June 9 to June 11.

In recent years, the Orioles have been able to get players like Kevin Gausman, Dylan Bundy, Manny Machado, and Matt Wieters through the draft. While they will not have a regular first round pick in this year’s draft since they signed Yovani Gallardo, who rejected a qualifying offer from the Texas Rangers, they will have a compensatory pick after the first round because they lost Wei-Yin Chen, who declined a qualifying offer from the Orioles. The Orioles own the 27th overall pick in the draft.
The 2016 MLB Draft will be aired on MLB Network on June 9. It will likely start at around 7:00 PM EST, but the start time has yet to be officially announced.
