Baltimore Orioles possibly sending Miguel Gonzalez to the DL

Buck Showalter had to lift Miguel Gonzalez from Tuesday’s game Baltimore Orioles game against Boston earlier than he had initially expected – this we know. Gonzalez was later diagnosed with a strained right groin. However now it appears that Gonzalez will end up having to spend time on the DL – possibly starting as early as this afternoon.

That’s not exactly the news that O’s fans wanted to hear. Gonzalez had a similar injury in 2012 for which he missed one

start. However in this case with the absence of an off day the Orioles can’t skip him without having someone start on short rest.

  • Speaking for myself the most rational thing to do would be to recall Kevin Gausman (from the DL) to take Gonzalez’s roster spot. I’ve long said that Gausman should be in the rotation. However I suspect what the Orioles will do is recall Mike Wright, who by virtue of the fact that Gonzalez is injured can come back to the majors before ten days. Gonzalez’s next scheduled turn in the rotation is Sunday, so they could also recall a reliever only to send him down again on Sunday when Wright or Gausman would be called up – along with Brian Matusz, who’s suspension will be up.

Going back to Gonzalez, once he goes to the DL it’s unclear how long he’ll be out. Ryan Flaherty spent two turns on the DL with a groin strain this year. All I can say is that based on my own experiences, these things can be painful.
