Am I seeing things, or do the Baltimore Orioles’ pitchers throw with more confidence when Matt Wieters is catching them? Miguel Gonzalez turned in a masterful effort Tuesday night, though he only last five innings before a groin injury forced him out of an eventual, 1-0 win.
Things appeared in Wednesday with Caleb Joseph back behind the plate, as the Orioles got the pitching from Wei-Yin Chen, Adam Jones turned in a defensive game that was an 11 on a scale of 1 to 10, and the hitting was timely in a 5-2 win over Boston. Tommy Hunter and Darren O’Day each worked two hitless innings, with O’Day striking out four and getting the save.

Jones’ night was unique, gunning down Xander Bogaerts at second base in the second inning, then running down a drive in the gap with a lunging catch, then flinging himself through the air for a full-extension, diving grab later. Mookie Betts was the hitter on both of those defensive gems.
As a result of Jones and Travis Snider both throwing out runners trying to stretch hits into doubles, the Orioles lead the major leagues with 20 outfield assists.

Nolan Reimold and Matt Wieters both figure to be starting in tomorrow’s game, and then the Yankees march in for a weekend series. Even though Joseph is a credible backup catcher, we’ll be seeing if Chris Tillman, the Thursday starter, smoothes out with Wieters calling what he throws.
