Baltimore Orioles, Wei-Yin Chen drop an error-fest

If you’re Wei-Yin Chen, you’re going to have a tough time winning when the Baltimore Orioles committ three errors in a game. It doesn’t matter how well you pitch. And while he didn’t make it out of the sixth inning yesterday at Fenway Park, he pitched very well. Chen’s line: 5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 7 K.

While the O’s did manage to win a game earlier this week in Washington while committing three errors, you can’t assume that’s going to be the norm. Washington basically let the Birds off the hook – Boston wasn’t quite so generous. Granted it’s easier to win if you’re able to score runs, and the O’s have now been shut out on two consecutive days at Fenway.

  • The game was scoreless through four full innings, until Boston’s Josh Rutledge smacked an RBI-double in the fifth. Holt would add an RBI-single in the sixth, and the Birds trailed 2-0. Manny Machado would commit a two-run fielding error in the seventh,  which in effect would blow the game wide open.

Rutledge would add a fielder’s choice-RBI, and Betts’ RBI-double in the last of the eighth would run the scord to 6-0. Machado would then committ his second error of the game by having a Bogaerts grounder go under his glove which yielded two more runs for Boston. All in all, it was the second consecutive game in which the O’s put up a zero on the scoreboard. You’re never going to win when you do that, but the errors certainly didn’t help.

The O’s need to get back in the win column and start getting some help – and quick – if they’re going to stay in contention in the last week of the season. Many fans have already written 2015 off (some a long time ago), and for sure the odds seem to be against the O’s qualifying for the post season. However as I’ve said many times, the team’s attitude has to be full speed ahead so long as they’re still mathematically in contention.

Incidentally if you want something on which to hang your hat, the O’s are in fact still in contention. In my 2015 season preview back in early April, I said that I felt at worst that the Orioles would be in contention until the bitter end. And that’s very much the case. There are plenty of teams that would kill for a chance to win some games and hopefully get some luck in this final week for a shot at going to the post season. Again, the odds are probably against that happening. But you never know – and that’s how the team approaches it.

The Orioles will try to salvage one game in Boston in the series finale this afternoon at Fenway. Ublado Jimenez will get the start for the Birds, and he’ll be opposed by Boston’s Henry Owens. Game time is set for just after 1:30 PM.
