Rico Garcia has bounced back when Orioles needed him the most 

It's been some kind of year for Baltimore Orioles reliever Rico Garcia. He started the first two months of the season as one of the most effective pitchers in all of baseball. His moment of glory was a little too short-lived however, as batters quickly began to figure him out. Yet as the Orioles still cling to a hopeful last-minute playoff push, he has once again become one of the team's most valuable arms out of the pen. 

On August 10, the Twins shelled Garcia for four runs on three hits. He was unable to record an out before being pulled from the game. It remains his worst outing of the entire season and accounts for nearly twenty percent of all of the earned runs he's allowed in 2026. A yes-hitter is not exactly the type of game you want to be remembered for. 

To Garcia’s credit, he has tried his absolute best to erase that game from fans’ memories. Since that poor performance against the Twins, he has returned to his early-season dominance. Over his last 17 appearances, Garcia has coughed up a single run while allowing just 10 hits in 14.2 innings. He has once again helped stabilize the Orioles' bullpen and stepped up as the new de facto closer during a time when the team could not afford any more avoidable losses. 

While the Orioles have squandered valuable opportunities to make up ground on teams ahead of them in the Wild Card hunt, they have yet to bow out either. Is that solely because of Garcia? Well, no. But he has shown a tremendous amount of grit and determination in a season that nobody really expected from him. The same could be said about the team as a whole.

Both Garcia and the Orioles have faced their fair share of adversity over the last couple of years. Even when they are at their lowest point, they have each managed to claw their way back and not throw in the towel. It’s why the Orioles have kept their 2026 postseason dreams alive for now and why Garcia has become a fan favorite.  

After Garcia briefly debuted with the Colorado Rockies in 2019, he struggled to find a permanent home, bouncing around from team to team. He didn't find his first modicum of success until last season with the New York Mets. After a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it pit stop with the New York Yankees, Garcia settled in Baltimore where he pitched fairly well in 20 games to end the 2025 season.   

But again, Garcia wasn’t expected to be anything more than a decent option out of the bullpen this year. Yet, through 72 games this season, he’s provided tremendous value as a reliever, accumulating 1.7 bWAR. That’s the third highest amount for any pitcher on the Orioles. His 0.964 WHIP is also the lowest on the team.  

Despite his mid-season struggles, Garcia has remained well-adept at missing batters’ barrels and not allowing hard contact against him. Although he has still struggled to get hitters to chase, his 31.9% Whiff rate ranks him among the best in the league.   

As of September 15, the Orioles remain three games back of the Cleveland Guardians for the third Wild Card spot. With the team’s remaining schedule only getting shorter, the Orioles may have run out of time to make their push. But with Garcia back to his elite form, they have one less question mark to worry about.
