The Orioles have had quite a ride since the 52-win season just three years ago in 2021. It's pretty wild to tell you that the Birds currently sit knotted at 67 wins and tied for first place in the AL East with a little under a third of the season remaining. Evidently, Mike Elias was the right man for the job, given that the Birds transformed into a 100-win caliber team under his supervision in five years.
Given the case, a handful of present Orioles played a pivotal role in turning the tides and saving Baltimore baseball from going extinct. However, the haul of homegrown talent making its way to the big leagues may force Elias to move away from their veterans to make way for the young talent. Here are four potential names poised to swap jerseys in the offseason, maintaining that the Orioles continue to produce such talent.
Cedric Mullins' time in Baltimore could be coming to a close
Trading Mullins wouldn't be shocking to most fans, given that the O's shopped him around at the deadline. Despite making an All Star appearance in 2021 and possessing elite defensive skills, the center fielder may be forced out of Baltimore at the end of the year.
His bat has continually declined since his .878 OPS in 2021, and his .657 mark in 2024 represents a career worst. With Colton Cowser coming into his own and promising talents such as Enrique Bradfield Jr and Dylan Beavers on their way, it may be time to ship Mullins off.
Lefty Cole Irvin lost his job, and could lose his roster spot this winter
It's fair to say that Irvin's stint in Baltimore hasn't entirely panned out as the front office had hoped. He was designated for assignment at the trade deadline, followed by a re-assignment to Triple-A Norfolk. Though making a move for Irvin was undoubtedly an ideal move heading into the 2023 season, following a sub-4 ERA season in Oakland, Irvin was optioned three times to the minors last season and hasn't been able to keep his head on straight.
Though the 30-year-old had a 2.01 ERA in May, everything went downhill shortly thereafter. He put up a 6.30 ERA in June, followed by a 9.00 ERA in July. With Chayce McDermott and southpaw Cade Povich on track to securing a rotation spot, Irvin will likely be considered trade bait in the offseason.
Top prospects could push utilityman Ramon Urias off the roster
With many high-end prospects beginning to make a dent in the majors, such as Henderson, Holliday, Mayo, and Cowser, it could mean that Urias will be let go. The Orioles certainly have a bright infield in place, and it's challenging to find room for Urias with such a promising group.
Holliday cranked his third homer on Tuesday and Gunnar has been the gold standard of shortstops this season. The Birds are seemingly ready to move forward with the Henderson-Holliday dynamic, and it would certainly pay to give Urias a shot at some reps in a different organization.
Jorge Mateo's declining defense could be his downfall
Formerly a top infield prospect for the division rival Yankees, Mateo is also on the verge of leaving Baltimore. The 29-year-old was recently placed on the injured list after a scary collision with Gunnar Henderson, giving leeway for Jackson Holliday to receive heavy reps at second base.
Despite Mateo's defensive qualities, his bat isn't much of a plus (.229/.267/.401 through 68 games), and the young infield prospects seem to outmatch him at the plate.
