Orioles' silence on Jackson Holliday MRI should be troubling for fans

Sometimes, no news IS bad news.

When the Baltimore Orioles first revealed that Jackson Holliday broke his hand in the opening days of camp, there was a healthy bit of optimism. The team didn't anticipate that he would be out long, and Holliday himself said that he was aiming to return in a matter of weeks. Unfortunately, Holliday's recovery has been anything but quick, and there are real concerns that his injury could be more serious than we thought.

Recently, Holliday experienced two different setbacks involving soreness in his surgically-repaired hand, and the situation was difficult enough that the team sent him for an MRI earlier this week. What has been very curious since then is that, instead of providing an update in the wake of those scans, there has been radio silence on Holliday, and that might mean bad news is coming.

Lack of updates on Jackson Holliday's MRI may mean fans should brace for a lengthy absence

Again, we don't actually know what Holliday's MRI showed, so everyone should step away from the ledge for now. However, the old adage that "no news is good news" does not apply to injuries in baseball. If Holliday's scans were clean, we would have known that almost immediately. Instead, it has been crickets from the Orioles.

It would not be that unusual for a follow-up scan on Holliday's hand to reveal a problem. There are just so many little bones in the human hand that you can miss small fractures very easily, especially if there is a lot of inflammation. It is also worth mentioning that everyone thought that Holliday's return timeline was aggressive from the beginning. There is a decent chance that Holliday's current situation is the result of rushing him back too quickly, and that would place blame squarely on Baltimore.

Ultimately, we won't know for sure until we get an actual update on Holliday's status. There is still some hope that the Orioles got good news on Holliday, and they are just waiting to formulate a game plan before announcing anything. However, that sort of response would be the exception to the rule in MLB, and it is far more likely that the MRI results will bring some bad news when they are revealed.
