Orioles reunite with former prospect in first official offseason move
Baltimore has kickstarted the offseason just hours after the conclusion of the World Series
The Orioles have wasted no time getting into hot stove season. Just a day after the World Series ended in New York, the O's have pulled off a trade with the Athletics to reunite with former outfield prospect Daz Cameron.
Cameron spent the year with the Norfolk Tides in 2023, where he hit a scorching .268/.346/.452 in 110 games. Despite his strong performance in Triple-A last year, he never got the chance to make an impact with the Orioles at the highest level.
Cameron left Baltimore as a free agent at the end of last year and signed a minor league deal with Oakland. After crushing once again at Triple-A, the Athletics called Cameron up in May and he played 66 games with the big league club. Unfortunately, Cameron wasn't very good in Oakland. He hit just .200/.258/.329 with 5 homers and 5 steals.
The Orioles didn't need to give up much to acquire Cameron, sending the classic cash considerations back to Oakland in exchange for the 27 year old. The trade was initially announced by the O's social media team on X.
It's unclear where Cameron fits into the Orioles' plans for 2025. Given his prior major league production, or lack thereof, this seems like a minor league depth move that'll give the Orioles another break glass in case of emergency option should they need it.
As it stands, the Orioles have just 33 players on their active 40-man roster. That's updated to include several players electing free agency after the conclusion of the World Series. Technically those players won't be able to sign elsewhere for another four days, but they're immediately removed from the team's roster after making the choice to test the market.
It's possible that Cameron makes it through the winter in the Orioles system. If he does, he'll wind up in spring training with a chance to prove he's worth keeping around. It's extremely unlikely that he makes the Orioles' Opening Day roster but could potentially be one of the first guys looked at if the O's need an injury replacement early on next year.
