One of the joys of social media for most people is being able to have direct contact with athletes and celebrities. Many famous people use these platforms to grow their fanbase by posting and having direct interaction with fans that used to only be possible on the rare occasion you ran into a celebrity in public. On Thursday, Orioles prospect Enrique Bradfield Jr. chose to share something about himself that led to a hilarious back and forth with a teammate.
Bradfield re-posted a video of himself from his last season at Vanderbilt robbing a home run, and stated "This is my favorite catch that I've ever made". In the video, Bradfield is seen sprinting back to the wall in straight-away center and bringing back a ball that clearly would have been over the wall for a home run. The catch showcases Bradfield's elite speed and defense, but curious minds wondered "what made this catch his favorite over catches that he'd made?"
Full disclosure; I am actually the person who asked why this catch was his favorite and Bradfield kindly took the time to explain. He had several reasons, including improving himself as a player and the size of the moment. But the reason that stood out the most is the first one that he gave, saying it was a "Huge team comeback". It says a lot about Bradfield that he put the team ahead of himself.
For those not familiar with the moment, It was the last game of the 2023 regular season. 12th ranked Vanderbilt was playing the #2 ranked Arkansas Razorbacks and it was a seesaw battle. Arkansas took and early 2-0 lead but Vanderbilt scored the next four runs. In the bottom of the eighth, Bradfield hit an infield single that allowed the tying run to score for Vanderbilt. After stealing both second and third bases, in true Bradfield fashion, he scored the eventual winning run on a balk.
Many other Orioles fans responded to Bradfield's post with excitement to see him make similar plays in Camden Yards and compared him to Orioles greats Adam Jones and Cedric Mullins. But one reply stood out as being different from the others. Tavian J. commented "least fav by far". Tavian J. is none other than Tavian Josenberger, who was on that Arkansas team that was defeated by Bradfield's Commodore's.
Something tells me this was not the first time these two discussed that game. Josenberger was drafted in the third round of the 2023 draft by the Baltimore Orioles, the same year they took Bradfield in the first round. Since then, these two have been teammates, and even shared an outfield, in every level of the O's minor league system from rookie ball to AA. Bradfield appeared to make light of Josenberger's comment in his response and I'm sure they both got a laugh out of the situation.
While Bradfield appears on track to become the Orioles' center-fielder of the future, Josenberger has increased his value by playing just about every position. In 2024 he appeared at second base, third base, shortstop, all three outfield positions and DH. He also stole 50 bases last season and could be the team's next Jorge Mateo. The interaction on X appears to be all in fun and those players could be bringing that fun to Baltimore in the coming seasons.
