The primary goal in spring training is for players to stay healthy at all costs. It is important to get in game-shape to be sure, but most fans will happily take sub-par production from key players in spring training in exchange for them starting the regular season on the field instead of the injured list. Unfortunately, the Baltimore Orioles may have just found out that even if staying healthy was the plan, that doesn't mean it is going to happen.
By all accounts, one of rookies that was best positioned to break out in 2026 was Samuel Basallo. With a rare combination of feel for hitting and pure raw power, Basallo has been on the short list of Rookie of the Year favorites ever since he got called up to the majors. There were some details to work out with regards to splitting time behind the plate with Adley Rutschman, but everyone expected Basallo to be in the lineup most days and play a key role in the offense.
Unfortunately, those plans just got turned upside-down. In the the third inning of the Orioles' spring training game against the Tigers, Basallo really stretched out to make a play at the plate and almost instantly grabbed his abdomen after the play. Not long after, Basallo left the game.
O's top prospect Samuel Basallo left today's Spring Training game when he sustained an apparent injury to his midsection.

Orioles fans holding their breath after scary Samuel Basallo injury
It is important to realize that we don't know the severity of Basallo's injury. That is particularly relevant in spring training as even the most minor bumps and bruises will have teams being extra cautious, especially with talking about key players like Basallo.
That said, this sure didn't look great. Good on Basallo for going for maximum extension on the tag at home, but one has to know their body's limitations and laying out like that is asking for trouble. One hopes that it is just a mild muscle strain that just needs a few days to calm down. However, there is a real chance that, as of now, Basallo's injury could be significantly worse.
In the event that Basallo does miss significant time, that could lead to an opportunity for Ryan Mountcastle or one of the Orioles' many other bats that are lurking in the shadows. One shouldn't jump the gun in case Basallo ends up being fine, but there are a few guys that may want to start putting some extra time in the batting cages starting now.
