The Baltimore Orioles finished dead last in the American League East last season. Injuries were not the only reason for that, but the team was banged up throughout the year which certainly makes one wonder if they need to take a harder look at their training staff.
The list of all the injuries the Orioles sustained last season is truly staggering. It seemed like all season right when the Orioles would get one player back from the injured list they would lose another one. Even guys like Gunnar Henderson who played in 154 games and is normally very durable revealed later on that he was dealing with a shoulder injury throughout the season.
Orioles need to take a look at training staff after injuries hampered team in 2025
Every team deals with injuries and plenty of players have to play through more minor injuries throughout the season, but 2025 felt somewhat excessive. Injuries even hurt the team's ability to compete in the future as closer Félix Bautista was unable to be traded ahead of the deadline due to his injury despite being an intriguing trade chip before getting hurt. Catcher Adley Rutschman's absence was probably felt the most given what he brings to the table both behind the plate defensively and at the plate with his bat.
So, how can this issue be remedied going forward? Maybe luck was just not on Baltimore's side in 2025 and next season will be better. Or maybe the team needs to train in a different way or be smarter about resting some of its players to ensure they are able to last throughout the season. One season can be an anomaly, but more issues may mean that Baltimore is going to have to take a long look at their training staff and their "return to play" procedures.
Obviously, the biggest issue for the Orioles is the fact that the talent on the roster is well behind many of the other teams in the AL East. With the Yankees and Blue Jays at the top of the division and the Boston Red Sox not far behind, it is going to be hard for Baltimore to keep pace in the AL East with such stout teams ahead of them. Baltimore will likely need close to full seasons from Rutschman, Henderson, Jackson Holliday, and Trevor Rogers if they are to have any chance of competing next season in what figures to be a tough AL East.
