According to a report from Matt Weyrich of the Baltimore Sun, Orioles' former owner John Angelos has officially parted ways with the organization after new owner David Rubenstein completed the final aspects of his purchase agreement with the franchise.
Angelos had reportedly been working in a senior advisory role within the organization over the past year but transitioned out of the position over the summer as Rubenstein became the primary control person for the Orioles back in August.
John Angelos' tenure as the steward of the Orioles' franchise will forever be viewed as a failure by fans. The erstwhile owner took over for his father, Peter Angelos, back in 2019 when Peter fell ill. The Orioles were terrible on the field for the two years prior to John assuming control, but they became a league-wide laughingstock between 2020-2023 with the elder Angelos brother at the helm.
John Angelos' time in Baltimore has officially come to an end
From pathetic shoestring budgets to embarrassing press conferences and quotes, baseball fans everywhere looked down upon the Orioles and their miserable ownership group. GM Mike Elias and his right hand man Sig Mejdal have never been known for their willingness to spend above and beyond to build a roster full of superstars, but the budget set by Angelos made even the most minor transactions difficult.
Whether Elias and his leadership group decide to utilize an increased budget now that Rubenstein has given them the go-ahead to open the purse strings a bit remains to be seen. But whether or not they do is besides the point.
Under Rubenstein's leadership, the Orioles' brass will at least have the opportunity to build out the roster without having to pull from the dregs of the free agent market. Rubenstein has said and done all the right things during his brief time in Baltimore, and it's come at just the right time as the Orioles are starting to turn things around with their on-field performance.
Whatever happens next, Orioles fans can be thankful that neither of the Angelos children will be part of it. A new day has dawned in Baltimore, and it looks a lot brighter than the dismal, hopeless days we've gotten used to.
