After playing some pretty uninspired baseball for most of the first half of the 2025 season, the Baltimore Orioles seem to be trending a bit upward. The Orioles are winners of seven of their last 10 games, and it is actually a bit unclear now if Baltimore will be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline despite their move to trade Bryan Baker away. However, the Orioles' doubleheader sweep of the Mets was notable for reasons beyond the continuation of good times.
Going back over nine years, the Orioles had not swept a doubleheader, which is pretty wild to think about. With their sweep on Thursday, the streak of doubleheaders without a Baltimore sweep came to an end at 29.
Orioles' doubleheader sweep was their first such sweep since 2016
It is hard to believe that the last time Baltimore swept a doubleheader was way back on June 25, 2016. Kevin Gausman was in the Orioles' rotation and started one of the games, and Matt Wieters had a big game in the second half of the twin bill to secure the sweep. Oh, how times have changed.
Beating such a weird streak is nice, but it is how it happened that should have Orioles fans optimistic. Tomoyuki Sugano actually gave Baltimore some real innings and looked like a serviceable back-of-the-rotation starter. The bullpen sans Baker locked things down, and many of the Orioles' young bats that have struggled thus far, including Gunnar Henderson, Colton Cowser, and Jordan Westburg, played big roles in both wins.
Hopefully, the Orioles can keep this up even if it creates an awkward situation at the trade deadline. Most of the baseball world seems to have already written Baltimore off this season, and that is fair, but it is becoming clear that the Orioles themselves think this group can make some noise and are out to prove it.
