Mets fans' Pete Alonso alliance with Orioles ends abruptly after O's late-night tweet

It didn't take long for Mets fans to turn against former fan favorite Pete Alonso. Over the last few days, Alonso has gotten praise from Mets fans and media because of his first return to Citi Field with the Baltimore Orioles. SNY posted interviews with him reminiscing about his biggest moments in a Mets uniform, and he received a standing ovation from the fans before his first at-bat.

Alonso also received a curtain call after he reached his major home run milestone, hitting career home run No. 300, in epic fashion: a ninth-inning solo shot that tied the game at 3-3 and sent the game to extra innings. The rose-tinted glasses focused on Alonso by the Mets fans seemingly broke, though, after the Orioles' social media goading following what happened in the eleventh.

With two outs in the top of the eleventh, Coby Mayo had a 0-2 count with runners on first and second. Mayo drove a ball to deep center field, which hit off the glove of the jumping AJ Ewing. Ewing stayed down for a moment after a hard hit against the wall, and it allowed Mayo to round the bases for an inside-the-park home run. Baltimore's official X account posted the clip with the caption, "NEW YORK MESS," and now Mets fans are pushing back against the O's and Alonso.

Mets fans didn't take kindly to the Orioles' post on X it is just terrific

Jolly Olive, a lifelong Mets fan and baseball content creator, and Bobby Wagner (not the football player), also a Mets fan and a host of the baseball podcast Tipping Pitches, both replied to the O's post, pointing out how long it had been since Baltimore had won a playoff game. Olive pointed out that they haven't won since he was a freshman in high school and that he is now 27. Wagner mentioned the fact that they haven't won one since the Obama Administration.

Other Mets fans' responses included "Hmmm I’m thinking that’s enough with the standing ovations and curtain calls for Pete now guys" and, "So their best player in Pete Alonso just said 'you can always have a 2nd favorite team', But then the Orioles admin just ruined the possibility for new fans." This tweet was a callback to a 2024 tweet the Orioles had made when they played the Mets. At the time, both social media accounts were poking at each other with wordplay.

It is funny to see just how quickly Mets fans turned against a former favorite. The Mets are out of the playoff picture, and Baltimore still has a chance, which is why Alonso made the comment that Mets fans could root for the O's. It seems like after that post, that won't be happening.
