Latest manager buzz proves Orioles may not be taken seriously by insiders

After the Texas Rangers hired Skip Schumaker to be their next manager, there's a very easy case to be made that the Baltimore Orioles' managerial vacancy is one now of the most attractive openings on the market this offseason.

The San Francisco Giants may have something to say about that, especially with superstar slugger Rafael Devers on the roster and a front office that's never afraid to be aggressive. But with the abundance of young talent, the Orioles are certainly in a position to contend in 2026. Despite that, however, it seems that insiders aren't hearing much when it comes to the O's vacancy.

The Athletic's Brittany Ghiroli (subscription required) offered an update on the open managerial jobs across Major League Baseball this offseason, and the Orioles' gig barely gets touched.

MLB insider quietly snubs Orioles in new manager buzz update

Ghiroli pointed out that the Orioles are one of the few teams with an opening that could be in win-now mode, and that could attract someone like former Chicago Cubs manager David Ross. However, it was speculative in nature, and the real update from Ghiroli is that the Orioles may be in a holding pattern until after the playoffs.

"The Orioles are a little further ahead in the process than the Braves, though they β€” like several other clubs β€” may choose to wait until the postseason ends to interview candidates from teams still playing."

To be fair to Mike Elias and Co., the managerial market isn't passing the Orioles by. Schumaker being hired by the Rangers has been the only move, and the rapid pace of Texas' process was likely because they already had the former National League Manager of the Year in the building.

If the Orioles are indeed waiting until after the playoffs to begin their search in earnest, they will need to be prepared to act with urgency. They have a respectable core of young position players that should attract candidates to the job, but with looming potential openings with the New York Mets and Houston Astros after next season, the Orioles still have some selling to do.
