With the Silver Slugger finalists being announced this week exclusively by FanSided, thanks to a partnership with Louisville Slugger, it is a great time to start thinking back to the Baltimore Orioles' history with the Silver Sluggers. While the award has only been in existence since 1980, the Orioles have certainly made their mark when it comes to racking up Silver Slugger wins over the last 45 years.
In fact, the Orioles have received 25 Silver Slugger awards since it was created, which puts them roughly in the middle of the pack when compared to other MLB teams. As to who took home the hardware, that is a long and rather varied list.
Here are all of the Orioles Silver Sluggers winners in history
This is not a list of Orioles Silver Slugger finalists or Orioles that should have won Silver Sluggers over the course of history. Such a list would be extremely long and difficult to parse. When appropriate, players with multiple wins have that noted here with the years they took home a Silver Slugger. It is fair to say that there are a number of easy guesses here, as well as a few Orioles fans may have forgotten.
Eddie Murray - 1983, 1984
One of the bigger sins in Orioles' history was the deterioration of their relationship with future Hall of Famer Eddie Murray, given how great he was and how he was ultimately sent out of town in a move that some fans are still mourning. 1983 and 1984 were arguably Murray's two finest seasons as he posted OPSes of .930 and .918, respectively, and finished in the top four of MVP voting in both seasons.
Cal Ripken Jr. - 1983-1986, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1994
The least surprising entry here is Cal Ripken Jr., who is the main face of the entire franchise. In addition to his iron man streak that became his calling card, Ripken Jr. could also obviously mash, as shown with his eight Silver Slugger wins during the course of his career.
Mickey Tettleton - 1989
Younger Orioles fans may not remember Mickey Tettleton, but he put together a really solid 14-year career in the big leagues, including three seasons with Baltimore. Tettleton had a couple of really good years with the Tigers as well, but 1989 may have been his best season at the plate with a .258/.369/.509 line with 26 homers.
Roberto Alomar - 1996
Roberto Alomar's Hall of Fame career included several stops around MLB, including a three-year stint with the Orioles. His 1996 season is unfortunately most remembered for his spitting incident, but he did take down a Silver Slugger that season as well, thanks to his .938 OPS.
Rafael Palmeiro - 1998
Rafael Palmeiro's legacy has been undeniably tarnished by allegations of using performance-enhancing drugs, but there is no denying that he was a very, very productive hitter. Palmeiro had two different eras with the Orioles, with multiple really strong seasons at the plate, but 1998 was his lone win with the Orioles and one of only two he received in his entire career.
Melvin Mora - 2004
Melvin Mora's time with the Orioles seems to have been forgotten, but he was really good, especially from 2002-2005. However, 2004 was the only time he took home a Silver Slugger with a .340/.419/.562 line in 636 plate appearances.
Miguel Tejada - 2004, 2005
As good as Miguel Tejada was, there is no ignoring the fact that steroids and other suspensions cloud his legacy significantly. Oddly enough, Tejada did not win a Silver Slugger during his MVP season; he did take home two now-tainted Silver Sluggers in 2004 and 2005.
Aubrey Huff - 2008
Before he was known as an ex-player who says vile things on social media and is willing to fight anyone on the internet, Aubrey Huff was a pretty good hitter in his day. Huff's only Silver Slugger came with the Orioles in 2008 when he slashed .304/.360/.552 and got some down-ballot MVP votes.
Chris Davis - 2013
Yes, Chris Davis' contract with the Orioles has gone down as one of the worst deals in baseball history, but there was a reason why he got that contract in the first place, as he was once one of the league's most feared sluggers. 2013 was Davis' best season, where he cranked 53 home runs and drove in 138 runs en route to his only Silver Slugger win.
JJ Hardy - 2013
JJ Hardy is most remembered for being a Gold Glove defender at shortstop, but he had some pretty good offensive seasons during his career as well. Hardy took down his only Silver Slugger in 2013 despite "only" having a 738 OPS, although hitting 25 home runs certainly helped his case.
Adam Jones - 2013
It is a little surprising that Adam Jones only won a single Silver Slugger, given how good he was from 2008-2015, where he averaged a .786 OPS. However, competition in the outfield when it comes to Silver Sluggers is fierce, and Jones seemed to hate drawing walks, but his .285/.318/.493 line was enough to take down the hardware that year.
Mark Trumbo - 2016
You are forgiven if you are an Orioles fan and have forgotten about the Mark Trumbo era, given how quickly his career dropped off. However, for one magical season in 2016, Trumbo was an absolute monster and connected for 47 homers to secure a Silver Slugger.
Cedric Mullins - 2021
It would have been great if the 2021 version of Cedric Mullins as a hitter showed up every season, as he would have been a perennial MVP candidate for the Orioles, given how good his defense could be. While that sadly wasn't the case, Mullins still had a great year that season with a .878 OPS before his bat fell off a cliff and he was ultimately traded to the Mets.
Gunnar Henderson - 2023
Gunnar Henderson's 2023 Silver Slugger felt like it would be the first of many, although the existence of Bobby Witt Jr. certainly complicates that effort. Henderson remains one of the most exciting young players in baseball, and his sensational 2023 rookie season is where it all started.
Adley Rutschman - 2023
Joining Henderson among the 2023 Silver Slugger winners was catcher Adley Rutschman. Yes, it is true that much of the shine has worn off of Rutschman, and now he may be a trade candidate, but 2023 was a reminder of what he is capable of when he is dialed in and healthy at the plate.
Anthony Santander - 2024
Rounding out the list of Orioles Silver Sluggers winners (for now) is Anthony Santander, whose 44-home run outburst in 2024 got him some hardware. His tenure with his new team, the Blue Jays, is not off to a great start, mostly because of injuries, but it is still true that Santander was a valuable cog in the Orioles' lineup that was sorely missed this season.
