1970 Baltimore Orioles Move On to Round 3 in Bracket Challenge

Turns out the 1970 Baltimore Orioles weren’t just good on actual field, but they are also good on the virtual one.

In the second round of the MLB Dream Bracket 2.0, the 1970 Baltimore Orioles moved past the 1983 Chicago White Sox.

It took seven games and a few back-and-forth blowouts to do it, but your 1970 Orioles have moved on to the round of 16. In Round 3, they play the 1954 Indians. The results will be posted on MLB.com: May 28 at 5 p.m. ET.

The Round Two scores for the Orioles and White Sox seven-game series were:

  • Game 1: White Sox 8-6
  • Game 2: Orioles 19-1
  • Game 3: White Sox 5-3
  • Game 4: Orioles 12-7
  • Game 5: White Sox 7-0
  • Game 6: Orioles 5-4
  • Game 7:  Orioles 5-4

Game Two was a doozy. Mike Cuellar virtually pitched eight innings of no-hit baseball. He struck out four. The only hit and run recorded by the White Sox was a home run in the ninth off of Tom Phoebus. Every hitter in the lineup recorded at least one hit, with six of them getting two, and Boog Powell going 3-4 in the virtual game.

The other notable performance was in Game 4 when Paul Blair hit THREE home runs to go 3-4 with 8 RBI. Two of his dingers were off of White Sox pitcher Britt Burns. Unfortunately, we’ll never know if Blair would have done anything like this in reality, as they never went head-to-head. But, on July 10, 1980 (Blair’s last year in the MLB), the Orioles lit up Burns – scoring seven runs in the first two innings of the game. Eddie Murray earned three RBI in that game in the first two innings alone!

That same year, the Orioles gave him a second loss in as many outings. On August 6, 1980 at Memorial Stadium, the O’s defeated the White Sox and Burns 4-1. It wasn’t the routing they gave him in July, but he pitched the entire game and again, Murray hit his second home run in as many games. Ken Singleton earned three RBI in the game, too.

The bracket games might not offer the same level of enjoyment as the Players’ Tournament did. But, it does give us the opportunity to look back at the prowess of these legendary players. The 1970 Orioles certainly did not disappoint. You can see the box scores from Round Two here.
