Ahead of their series finale against the Detroit Tigers, the Baltimore Orioles made a roster move.

Just before taking the field for one final game against the Detroit Tigers, the Baltimore Orioles announced a small roster move involving their pitching staff. Per an official team release, the Orioles have claimed RHP Eric Hanhold off waivers from the New York Mets and designated RHP Ty Blach for assignment.

Blach was claimed off waivers from the San Francisco Giants in early August and was never able to gain footing with the Orioles. In five starts at the big league level, Blach went 1-3 with an 11.32 ERA, 2.18 WHIP, and .356 average against. He struck out 17, walked 13, and gave up six home runs in 20.2 total innings.

Hanhold was DFA’d by New York just a few days ago to make room for RHP Donnie Hart, a former Baltimore Oriole bullpen piece.

A former sixth-round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers out of the University of Florida, Hanhold has made three appearances at the major league level in his career. He gave up two runs on four hits, walking one, and striking out two in 2.1 innings of work last season with the Mets.

More from Birds Watcher

He has spent the entire 2019 season in the minors, posting a 5-4 record, 3.84 ERA, and 1.48 WHIP in 48 appearances with the Double-A Binghamton Rumble Ponies and Triple-A Syracuse Mets.

We can’t say we have heard of Hanhold before this afternoon, so we sought out some information about the 25-year-old reliever and found likely the most extensive piece written about him. If you would like to read a scouting report on the newest Oriole who may or not be around in a few weeks when the 40-man roster gets a complete overhaul, you can check out this report over at Amazin’ Avenue, SB Nation’s New York Mets blog.

The upper-90’s fastball and slider combination sound intriguing, so we’ll see what happens. According to MASN’s Roch Kubatko, Hanhold is expected to join the team in Baltimore tomorrow when the Orioles take on the Blue Jays. If he appears in a game over the final two weeks of the season, he will be the 39th player to pitch for Baltimore in 2019.

Editor’s Note- 9/17 update: According to Kubatko, Hanhold will not report to the team this season. If we see Hanhold at all, it won’t be until spring training.
