The Baltimore Orioles just accomplished something that no other team has done in 2017 against the Boston Red Sox.

At the home of the Red Sox, the Baltimore Orioles swept the three-game series. No other team has swept the Red Sox in any park in all of 2017. That it was done at Fenway made the sweep so much sweeter.

Along with the three-game sweep, the Red Sox also gave up the most runs in a series. The Orioles scored 25 runs against the Red Sox during the last three games. And, in the Red Sox’s final game against the Cleveland Indians, the Sox lost 13-6. Boston certainly hasn’t looked good in their last four games.

Players’ Weekend certainly looked good on the Baltimore Orioles.

This notable win was awarded to Wade Miley, who pitched five innings. He now has a record of 8-10 and an ERA of 4.99.

Pitching kept it close

Miley was supported by four strategically used relief pitchers, but a few did get into a little trouble in the sixth. After giving up a double in the sixth, Buck Showalter put Mychal Givens on the mound. He pitched two outs in the sixth, but allowed Miley’s final base runner to score. Givens also gave up a double and walked a batter before recording his second out. Givens was followed by Richard Bleier, who was supposed to get an out but walked Andrew Benintendi instead. Showalter immediately replaced Bleier with Miguel Castro, who did get the third out of the inning.

Castro finished the sixth and the seventh. He recorded one out in the eighth and after walking Sandy Leon, Showalter replaced Castro with Brad Brach, who got the final two outs immediately and closed the game. With this game, Brach recorded his 17th save of the season.

Bats started strong

Both teams had quiet bats as two runs were enough for the Orioles to get the win. In a strange turn of events, no players recorded home runs. Trey Mancini had the best day at the plate going three for four with a ground-rule double in the first inning. That double earned Mancini the game-winning RBI as he plated Adam Jones, who earned his way on the base paths with his own early double. Jones earned the first RBI of the game as his double plated Tim Beckham.

The Orioles were smart to get to Fister early in the game. In his last start against the Cleveland Indians, he gave up a home run in the first inning to the lead-off batter, then pitched a no-hitter throughout the rest of the game in 114 pitches.

Beckham and Jones both recorded one hit on the day. Chris Davis earned a hit in the top of the sixth, but the batters who followed him were unable to get him home.

Where in the Wild Card

This win moves the Orioles three teams out of the second Wild Card spot. With the Orioles enjoying a .500 record, they now have to outperform the Los Angeles Angels, Seattle Mariners, and Minnesota Twins to get to the second spot.

The O’s could move up significantly in the Wild Card chase as their next series is against the Mariners. The three-game series opens up Monday night. Unfortunately, they have to auction off the Players’ Weekend uniforms that appeared to have brought them so much luck against the Red Sox.
