Baltimore Orioles: Orioles acquire RHP Logan Verrett from Mets

Almost two months after the 2016 season ended, the Orioles have made their first deal of the offseason.

The Baltimore Orioles have made the first move to improving their roster this offseason. But it’s no one from the free agent market.

According to Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com, the Baltimore Orioles have acquired RHP Logan Verrett from the New York Mets in exchange for cash considerations ($50,000).

Verrett was actually in the Orioles organization last season after he was picked in the Rule 5 Draft. The Orioles eventually lost him in Spring Training where Verrett eventually found his way back to the Mets after a pit stop with the Texas Rangers.

Following the trade, Orioles vice president Dan Duquette said the following:

“He’s a really good, dependable pitcher. And he can do a variety of roles on a pitching staff — starting, long relief, short relief. We liked him when he was here before; wish we had kept him here. Should’ve held on to him, but we are glad he’s back.”

Duquette anticipates Verrett will be either a swingman, or a bullpen piece. Duquette said it’s also possible Verrett ends up in the rotation.

“He’s a good kid, a very competitive kid who can do a number of different jobs for a pitching staff. Every pitching staff needs a pitcher like Logan Verrett.”

Verrett actually made the Major Leagues with the New York Mets in 2016, going 3-8 with a 5.20 ERA, a 1.560 WHIP and a 79 ERA+ in 91.2 innings.
