The Baltimore Orioles have traded prospect Ariel Miranda to Seattle for pitcher Wade Miley.
The Baltimore Orioles completed a trade this afternoon in the wake of their 6-2 victory in Toronto (more on that tomorrow morning). They aquired LHP Wade Miley from Seattle, sending back prospect Ariel Miranda. MIley has a 7-8 record this year, and a 4.98 ERA. The deal is pending a physical.
On paper that might not be the greatest deal for the Birds. Miley obviously has struggled this year, however those numbers are inflated a bit due to a poor start. He’s righted the ship as the season has gone on. Miley is currently in Chicago where Seattle is playing the Sunday night game against the Chicago Cubs. I would presume that he’ll be with the Orioles by the time they open up their series at home with Texas on Tuesday.
It’s worth mentioning that Miley is a southpaw. That’s something that the Orioles haven’t had in their starting rotation all season. I wrote about that in spring training, and about the fact that it concerned me a bit. However now the O’s have one, and he came relatively cheap.

Call to the Pen
It’ll be interesting to see how the O’s manipulate the roster with Miley coming on. Is this the end for Ubaldo Jimenez? It’s really tough to say. I’m on record as saying that it would be stupid from a business standpoint if the Orioles DFA him, as they’ll still be paying his salary. But time will tell.
Incidentally, the O’s signed Miranda to a minor league contract last May when he defected from Cuba. He briefly came up to the big leagues earlier this year, and made his big league debut. So given that they got a starting pitcher in return, the Birds got away with giving away relatively little. Miley is under team control until after next year, however there’s also a club option for 2018.

Some fans are going to say this is a somewhat underwhelming move. And there’s a part of me that agrees. However they needed a starting pitcher, and they went out and got one. And it came relatively cheaply to them, as they didn’t have to give too much away. Furthermore, the Birds have a history of winning trades with Seattle – in case you never noticed.

As always, the deal is pending a physical – as I stated above. Some folks will shoo that away given the fact that the Orioles have a history of finding things on physicals They’ve also been right much of the time. But my prediction is that Miley joins the Orioles without any problems. Jon Heyman of CBS first reported the deal.
