The Baltimore Orioles got a quality start out of Kevin Gausman but fell once again in Seattle, by the score of 5-2.

The Baltimore Orioles seem to have hit a bit of a skid since arriving in Seattle. Of course they came into the series having won seven straight games. However since getting there, they’ve lost two straight. Furthermore the bats haven’t been quite what they were before arriving. Granted however, Safeco Field is definitely a park that favors pitchers.

Kevin Gausman gave the Orioles a quality start, however ended up on the losing end once again. Gausman’s line: 6.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 7 K. Some will argue that this wasn’t truly a “quality start” for Gausman, but the numbers say otherwise. Either way, no walks over six innings is pretty impressive.

The O’s found themselves in an early whole after Smith homered in the last of the first inning. But they bounced right back; Chris Davis answered in the top of the second with a solo homer of his own, tying the game at one. The Birds would actually take a 2-1 lead in the third on an RBI-single by Schoop.

  • But a two-run homer by Seager in the sixth and another two-run homer by Lee in the eighth did the O’s in. It’s somewhat ironic that Oriole bats are struggling a bit in Seattle, yet they dropped this game squarely on home runs hit by the opposition. Normally as we know, it’s the other way around.

Safeco Field has always been a pitcher’s park, and Seattle pitchers have always been comfortable there. However this past off season they moved the fences in a bit, making it just a bit less of a pitcher’s park. It still favors pitchers, just not as much.

The O’s will have to find a way to get their bats back on track if they’re going to split the series with Seattle. However also keep in mind that Seattle took two-of-three from the O’s earlier in the year at Camden Yards. So it’s entirely possible that they just match up well against the Orioles.

Even with giving up the two homers, you can look at Gausman once again as a hard-luck loser given that this was a quality start. He gave the team a shot to win, and they had their chances. But at the end of the day, he gets tagged with the loss.

The series will continue late this evening in Seattle. Tyler Wilson will be on the mound for the Orioles, and he’ll be opposed by Seattle’s James Paxton. Game time is set for just after 10 PM.
