The Baltimore Orioles put up 13 runs including three RBI fro Matt Wieters, to defeat Boston in a slugfest, 13-9.

When Boston’s Betts led off last night’s game with yet another homer last night, many Baltimore Orioles players and fans (including Matt Wieters) had a sinking feeling. Betts of course had homered three times on Tuesday, and before Wednesday would end he’d homer yet another time. But the good news is that the Birds had a few tricks up their sleeves also.

Mike Wright struggled in his start, but more so with controling his emotions than anything else. Wright appeared visibly upset at himself a few times, which I suspect led to Showalter lifting him when he did. Having said that, last night wasn’t one for pitchers – be it Wright or any reliever. Wright’s line: 2.2 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 0 BB, 2 K.

The O’s took a 2-1 lead in the last of the first on Mark Trumbo‘s two-RBI single. Wieters would add a sac fly-RBI, and Pedro Alvarez‘s RBI-double rounded things off at 4-1 for the O’s. However Boston came back with two home runs (including Betts’ second) to tie the score at four in the second. Wright also lobbed a pitch over Betts’ head, and while warnings were issued (without cause in my opinion) both teams seemed to be of the mindset that there was no intent.

  • The teams traded runs, however the Birds eventually found themselves trailing leading 8-7 in the fourth after a Machado RBI-single. However Boston tied it on Pedroia’s RBI-single in the top of the sixth – only to see the O’s take the lead back for good. Wieters reached base on an error, which allowed the go-ahead run to score from third. Flaherty then grounded into a fielder’s choice-RBI, and the O’s led 10-8.

Wieters and Schoop would add RBI in the last of the seventh, and Boston’s Young would homer in the eighth. Yeah folks, the final score here was 13-8. In going back to Mike Wright for a moment, it wouldn’t surprise me if he ends up being the corresponding roster move when Gallardo comes off the DL at some point in the near future. That’s not a poor reflection on Wright as much as it is just saying that he has an opportunity to season himself a bit. But who knows what the future holds.

After the game Showalter addressed the warnings issued to both benches (quote courtesy of Roch Kubatko, MASNsports):

I know what it looks like and I know it’s with a guy who’s swinging real well against us. It was up than it was in. The next inning, their guy threw a pitch in about the same place to (Mark) Trumbo that didn’t seem to bring all the drama. I understand what it looks like. That’s why I didn’t argue a lot. If you look at things realistically, there are two pitches there basically the same, but one guy hadn’t hit 150 home runs against us in two days.

As I said, it appeared that both teams seemed of the impression that there was no intent on Wright’s part. His control was a bit off as it was last night, and that one obviously slipped. However umpires are now taught to do anything they can to avoid a brawl. Hence the warnings.

The O’s also won this game despite Boston hitting five home runs – to their zero. Now mind you that the O’s got some huge knocks in this game, and they hardly won it by playing small ball. They just didn’t homer, which in my view is somewhat of a statistical oddity.

This game nearly took on the look of a marathon – the third inning itself wasn’t over until 8:45 PM! But when the final score is 13-9, that’s going to happen. These teams combined for 22 runs last night. That’s going to take some time.

The O’s will try to split the series in the finale this evening. Ubaldo Jimenez gets the start for the Birds, and he’ll be opposed by Boston’s Rick Porcello. Game time is set for just after 7 PM.
