Baltimore Orioles, Mike Wright fall in Toronto

The Baltimore Orioles sent Mike Wright back to the mound for the first time since returning from the DL, but not with the results for which they had hoped. Wright’s line: 4 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 4 K. Wright did have some zip on his fastball, however he had some trouble locating it at times.

of the first and the O’s trailed 1-0. In his next at-bat Bautista would hit a one-hopper over the wall with runners at first and second, and the Birds trailed 2-0. One inning later a Revere RBI-single ran the score to 4-0, and effectively ended Wright’s day.

Toronto would score off of a Martin fielder’s choice-RBI in the fifth after Wright left the game in the fifth, and then another on a Goins RBI-double. The Birds did mount a mini-rally of sorts when Caleb Joseph plated a run with an RBI-single in the seventh. But that rally was squashed at the end of the day, and the Birds fell.
I felt that the selection of Wright was very interesting for this game. The Orioles are in a position in which they’re starting to put some of their young starters in a spot where it’s time to sink or swim. Wright had his bumps and bruises in this game, however it wasn’t a total loss given the fact that he had come back off the DL to make this start. He’s a young pitcher, which means that he still has plenty of learning that needs to be done.
Furthermore going into next season the Birds might find themselves in an open competition for starting pitching – so come spring training Wright might well be a part of that. However in the here and now, the O’s are still in contention. Unless they’re mathematically eliminated from post season possibilities, they need to forge ahead with that in mind. This is not to say that Wright was the wrong guy to start today, however it does explain why the O’s had such a quick hook on him.
