Baltimore Orioles, Chris Davis: We didn’t hear no bell!

With his two homers in tonight’s Baltimore Orioles victory in Toronto, Chris Davis became the first MLB player to reach the 40 home run plateau this season. However more importantly, the O’s got a win over a bitter division rival at a tie when they’re on their last call of sorts in terms of battling for a post season spot. In doing so, they put Toronto and the rest of baseball on notice that (as Rocky Balboa says) we didn’t hear no bell!

The O’s got a great outing out of Ubaldo Jimenez. It wasn’t a quality start, but he

left the Birds in a great position to win the game. Jimenez’s line: 5.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R (one earned), 6 BB, 4 K. Jimenez had the lead as early as the second inning when Davis hit the first of his eventual two homers – a solo shot. Later in the inning the Birds would take a 2-0 lead on Ryan Flaherty’s RBI-double, although Toronto’s Goins grounded into a force out in the last of the inning which cut the lead back to 2-1.

  • Toronto would tie the game at two in the last of the fifth on a Donaldson sac fly-RBI. However on this night at least, the O’s were having none of Toronto’s shenannigans. This is a team that’s given the Orioles nightmares dating back a few seasons, however the true colors of this night were orange and black. Almost as soon as the game was tied and Toronto was feeling like they had restored order to their bizarro-universe, the Birds took control back.

With Adam Jones already on base in the top of the sixth, Davis officially launched his 40th homer which gave the Birds the lead for good at 4-2. The O’s would add to that lead later in the inning on a Wieters solo shot, which gave the Orioles a 5-2 lead. Machado added a sac fly-RBI, and Parra a two-run double in the eighth. To top things off, Jones would close the scoring in the game with a two-run homer of his own in the last of the eigth, handing the Orioles a 10-2 victory.

This victory barely put a dent in the number of games the Orioles are back in both the division and the wild card races. However until you’re mathematically eliminated, you absolutely have to operate with getting to the post season in mind. However this game puts not only Toronto, but also the entire league on notice that the Orioles aren’t quite done yet. How likely their chances are is another story – but again to use the Rocky Balboa motif, I didn’t hear no bell!

Two Orioles batsmen (one of which being Adam Jones) were hit in this game, after which Showalter did not appear to be happy. But the Jones homer came in the wake of that situation, which obviously gave the Orioles all of the motivation that they needed. My personal opinion is that if someone wants to pick a fight with you, there’s the need to defend yourself. But the Orioles’ defense was shutting down Toronto as opposed to giving them what they appeared to want – a fight.

The series continues tomorrow afternoon with Mike Wright coming off of the DL to make the start. He’ll be opposed by Toronto’s David PriceGame time is set for just after 1 PM tomorrow afternoon.
