What Jordan Westburg's return means for this Orioles player

Jordan Westburg is set to return to the Baltimore Orioles lineup Tuesday night against the Detroit Tigers. A couple of Orioles may see a dip in opportunities upon the All-Star's return.

Westburg has been on the injured list since April 28, but has torn up Triple-A pitching during his rehab assignment, hitting .393 during his eight-game stretch in the minors. He will likely retake third base duties when he returns, leaving some players on the outside looking in.

Ramon Urias has been the primary third baseman for the Orioles since Westburg went down. While Urias' bat has been steady in the Orioles' lineup with how the season has unfolded, he will be getting squeezed out of third base in favor of Westburg. Urias is hitting .274 with two home runs on the season, and with former Orioles top prospect Coby Mayo beginning to get settled at the plate, Urias may be scavenging for playing time.

After going 1-for-12 when the Orioles called him up earlier this season, Mayo has begun to steady himself in the batter's box, recording a hit in four of his six games since rejoining the team on May 31. Once a highly touted prospect in the Orioles' farm system, Mayo was underwhelming upon reaching the majors last season. Struggling out of the gate and carrying those demons into this season, but with his bat beginning to work in the right direction, interim manager Tony Mansolino may be inclined to find the young hitter time at first base and as the designated hitter.

This will squeeze Urias out of the lineup and relegate him to the bench, unless Mayo struggles again. Urias is a prime candidate to return to the lineup if that's the case. While the chances are slim, they are never zero, and the Orioles could opt to return Mayo to the minors.

Mayo's demotion might clear the way for Urias to remain a consistent name in the Orioles' lineup. With the uptick in production from Mayo and the Orioles entering Tuesday 12 games under .500, the team may find it beneficial for Mayo to stay in the majors.

Westburg's return raises many questions about who will play and how often, but the Orioles will be excited to have their All-Star back in the lineup regularly.
