The Baltimore Orioles have even more reason to celebrate, as two top prospects, Colton Cowser and Cade Povich, have earned Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week honors. Let's take a closer look at what these future stars were able to accomplish.
Orioles prospects Colton Cowser and Cade Povich receive player of the week honors in the minor leagues
Stop me if you've heard this before, but Colton Cowser is good at baseball. For the second time in six weeks Cowser was named the International Player of the Week. Cowser, the Orioles #3 prospect and #31 overall, has been having a stellar year in Triple-A Norfolk. Many Birds fans have been pleading with the organization to bring Cowser to the big league club and this week only made those pleas louder.
In six games between May 8-14, Cowser batted an incredible .500/.613/.864 with two home runs, 19 total bases and an out of this world 1.477 OPS, helping the Tides to a 4-2 record in that time. Cowser got off to a hot start this season and has only gotten better. O's fans are hoping to see Cowser in Camden Yards soon and at this rate the Orioles management won't be able to hold him back much longer.
Cade Povich, the Orioles #12 prospect, has been making quite the name for himself on the Double-A Bowie Baysox. Povich took the mound on May 11 against the Harrisburg Senators and didn't allow a run while tying his season high of 5.0 innings pitched. Povich faced 18 batters (just three over the minimum) and struck out 10.
Povich has been on an every other game pattern this year having a poor start (three starts allowing 10 runs in 11.2 innings) followed by a great start (three starts allowing zero runs in 15.0 innings). Povich continues to develop and If he can be more consistent, he could find himself in Norfolk before the end of this season.
