A vintage performance and another week of stellar production by a 2022 draftee. Let's recap!
Baltimore Orioles minor league recap: June 6-11
Norfolk Tides (AAA)
Series at Scranton/Willie-Barre RailRiders (Tides wins 3-2)
Record: 43-19 (Best team on International League)
Game 1: Cancelled (Air quality)
Game 2: NOR 5-3 SWB
Game 3: NOR 8-4 SWB
Game 4: NOR 4-2 SWB
Game 5: NOR 6-7 SWB (F/11)
Game 6: NOR 4-7 SWB
Due to air conditions, this series started on a Thursday. In the same game, Grayson Rodriguez struck out 10 with no walks in six innings of work (3 ER), and a inside-the-park Home Run by Heston Kjerstad for his first round tripper at Triple A. The offense was carried by 'MLB The Show WBC Legend' Robbie Glendinning (1.842 OPS) and our old friend, Terrin Vavra (1.583 OPS, 0 strikeouts). Joey Ortiz finished with a .364 batting average, Jordan Westburg hit two Home Runs (17 in 2023) and Connor Norby leaves the yard, too.
On the pitching side, newcomer Easton Lucas debuted with a scoreless outing (2.0 IP, BB, 4 K). DL Hall had no runs allowed too (4 BB, 3 K) and Orioles insider from The Athletic, Dan Connolly, wrote a piece ($) about the lefty. For the record: Norfolk hasn't lost a series this season. Pretty good, huh?
Next series: vs Worcester Red Sox
Bowie Baysox (AA)
Series at Erie SeaWolves (Baysox wins 5-1)
Record: 23-32 (7.0 GB on Eastern League Southwest)
Game 1: BOW 9-4 ERI
Game 2: BOW 8-7 ERI
Game 3: BOW 10-8 ERI (F/10)
Game 4: BOW 7-5 ERI
Game 5: BOW 6-2 ERI
Game 6: BOW 2-5 ERI
The best performance by Bowie in 2023 so far. On the mound, Chayce McDermott continued to impress with a 12-strikeout week against Erie (2 games) and three runs allowed (2 ER). He has 65 strikeouts on the year. A mention to Wandisson Charles. The 26-year-old Domincan has had a solid year in Double A with a scoreless outing (3.0 IP, 5 K) and lower his ERA to 2.70. Won't be surprised if he goes to Norfolk.
The offense is still alive without Kjerstad. Coby Mayo have a 25-game streak on-base (6-18, HR, 2B, RBI, 6 R, 1.076 OPS) and his fellows were great, too. Cesar Prieto and John Rhodes had 10+ hits each. The 24-year-old Cuban had a .362 batting average and a .409 on-base percentage. Does he get promoted to replace Westburg in the Tides lineup soon? Shayne Fontana, Joseph Rosa and Zach Watson had two HRs each.
Next series: vs RIchmond Flying Squirrels
Aberdeen IronBirds (High-A)
Series vs Asheville Tourists (Birds wins 4-2)
Record: 28-28 (4.5 GB on South Atlantic League North)
Game 1: ASH 0-11 ABD
Game 2: ASH 8-6 ABD
Game 3: ASH 1-3 ABD
Game 4: ASH 6-4 ABD (F/10)
Game 5: ASH 1-11 ABD
Game 6: ASH 3-8 ABD
On the best moves by Mike Elias piece last Sunday, one trade could be a honorable mention: the Sulser-Scott trade to Miami. In that deal, a pick from Marlins goes to Baltimore ahead the 2022 MLB Draft. With that pick, Baltimore snagged Florida outfielder Jud Fabian. Today, he's the SAL Player of the Week with an absurd performance (11-19, 3 HR, 3 2B, 11 RBI, 8 R, 2 SB, 1.851 OPS). With 43 RBI, Fabian led the SAL in that category. It's a GM Home Run, for sure.
On the mound, Alex Pham shoved again. A no-hit, 11-strikeout performance in five innings! Remember, Birdland: he was a 19th-round-pick in 2021 draft. Trace Bright founded his groove, too (4.0 IP, H, 2 BB, 7 K). And Jean Pinto? He lefty was a highlight reel last week, but the Orioles released a video about him. Get to know the Venezuelan pitcher soon-to-be-promoted to AA.
Next series: vs Brooklyn Cyclones
Delmarva Shorebirds (Low-A)
Series vs Down East Wood Ducks (Ducks wins 5-1)
Record: 25-31 (9.5 GB on Carolina League North)
Game 1: DE 3-2 DEL
Game 2: DE 7-9 DEL
Game 3: DE 7-1 DEL
Game 4: DE 14-6 DEL
Game 5: DE 7-5 DEL (F/10)
Game 6: DE 7-3 DEL
The only affiliate who lost a series last week. Juan Nunez, one of the four players from the Jorge Lopez deal, continued to strike out opposing batters. Overall, he struck out 15 in 9.0 IP (2 games) to raise his total to 67 (leads Delmarva by a mile). Edgar Portes (9), Jared Beck (8), Bradley Brehmer (7), Cesar Alvarez (6) and Moises Chace (6) also joined the strikeout party. The 19-year-old Yaqui Rivera had another week without allowed a run from relief. He has a 1.61 ERA in 15 games. Keep an eye on him, too.
The offense was a 'Carter Young Show' with a 10-hit performance and one of two Delmarva players who hit a Home Run (Elio Prado). He was growing recently and a Aberdeen promotion seems like a matter of time for the Vanderbilt product.
Next series: at Salem Red Sox
