3 Orioles players who won't finish the month of August on the big-league roster
August has just started, but there are 3 players who are close to being removed from the big-league roster, for a variety of reasons
As we get into the dog days of summer, and get closer to the roster expansion on September 1st, there are still a few players on the Orioles’ roster that I personally don’t see surviving on the roster to September 1st, for a variety of different reasons. From performance, to not fitting with the team, here are 3 players that I don’t believe will be on the roster come September 1st.
LHP Gregory Soto will get booted off the roster before the postseason
Listen, it is incredibly early to judge Gregory Soto considering he has only appeared in 3 games with the Orioles’ so far since they received him in a trade with the Phillies. But so far, Soto has disappointed heavily in his 3 appearances, with a whopping 54.00 ERA in 1.1 IP.
He has had no command so far, and has even said it himself in interviews. He has a 9.00 WHIP in Baltimore as well, which is beyond ridiculous for a guy that we gave up two prospects for. Soto will be off of the roster as soon as LHP Danny Coulombe has healed from his surgery.
Infielder Coby Mayo will wind up back in Triple-A
I am personally a big believer in Coby Mayo, and am only putting him on this list due to the Orioles’ prior track record of sending down struggling prospects. Mayo is currently Baltimore’s #3 prospect, sitting behind Jackson Holliday and Samuel Basallo, and the #15 overall prospect in all of baseball.
Mayo has struggled since getting called up to the big leagues, going hitless in his first 12 plate appearances, with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts. With that being said, I believe Elias will send him back down after a few more games played, just like he did with Jackson Holliday. Look how Holliday has flourished since getting called back up!
Outfielder Austin Slater won't hit well enough to keep his job
With Grayson Rodriguez's injury yesterday, I nearly put him in this spot, but I’m not sure how long the injury is going to keep him out for, if at all. However, I feel Austin Slater is only keeping this position warm for Heston Kjerstad, until he gets himself figured out coming back from his concussion.
The rough issue with Slater and Kjerstad is that we aren’t entirely sure how long it is going to take Heston to fully get himself back to where he was performing before his concussion. Slater is a decent fill-in for Kjerstad, but I don’t see him being on the roster if/when Kjerstad is ready before the end of September.
There are a few other names you could put in here, but because of injury, and unknown timetables for certain players who are injured, it is difficult to fill those holes until you have more of a set timetable for our players who are out.
