The Baltimore Orioles' biggest move at the Winter Meetings, signing Pete Alonso, wasn't quite them checking the box of adding another top-of-the-rotation arm to their pitching staff, but Alonso's arrival could set the stage for their next move.

Before the news broke of Alonso's signing, reports had the Orioles involved in trade talks with the Miami Marlins for cost-controlled starting pitcher Edward Cabrera.

Expected to make $3.1 million next season and under control for three more years, Cabrera wouldn't be a financial burden for the Orioles, and that could explain why they felt comfortable handing out $155 million to the slugging first baseman.

Beyond that, Alonso's addition to the roster has probably opened up new trade scenarios for Baltimore. Regardless of whether Alonso serves as the team's first baseman next season or designated hitter, the Orioles are now in a position where they could be willing to make Coby Mayo available in trade talks.

Cabrera was available at the trade deadline, and the Marlins had a high asking price. To give you an example of what Miami was looking for, the Chicago Cubs were among the teams interested but balked at the ask of two players from a group that included NL Rookie of the Year candidate Cade Horton, rookie third baseman Matt Shaw, and their top prospect Owen Caissie.

With Cabrera having a little less control now, the price may not be as high, but also don't expect Ryan Mountcastle to be the leading piece in an offer. The Orioles are believed to be looking for a corner infielder, so if not Mayo, Jordan Westburg could be a candidate to be included in the deal. Of course, there would need to be more from Baltimore, but with Alonso now in the fold, they act with more intent in trade talks.

There's no need to lessen the excitement of Alonso's signing; it's a big day for Baltimore. But it can't be lost on anyone that this roster is begging for another established starting pitcher to be added. That has to be the next domino that falls.
