Orioles steal top scout from AL rival, but that doesn't change their Mike Elias problem

The Baltimore Orioles have made a bold new hire that could help reshape the future of the ball club. First reported by Joe Doyle, the Orioles have hired Ty Holub to become a senior analyst in the team’s scouting department. While the addition of Holub could completely change the way that the team evaluates talent moving forward, it still might not be enough as long as Mike Elias remains with the team.     

If the name Holub doesn’t ring a bell, maybe the talent he is responsible for signing will. As a scout with the Mariners for the last nine seasons, Holub is directly linked to MLB players George Kirby and Ben Williamson as well as top prospects like Jonny Farmelo and Luke Stevenson. In joining the Orioles, he will look to help bring in a similar level of talent, if not better.

The Orioles have already revamped their minor league system with a number of trades this season, which has netted them some tremendous talent. However, as we’ve seen over the last several seasons, the organization hasn’t always gotten the most from their top prospects. With the addition of Holub, the Orioles will look to change their fortunes.  

Whether or not that is possible with Elias still in the front office remains the biggest question though.

It didn’t take long for Holub to confirm the move by updating his new job on LinkedIn, something that Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Fernando Mendoza would likely appreciate. As Holub noted in his post, this will be a reunion with the Orioles organization. He previously worked as a Baseball Operations Assistant for the team for four years before heading to Seattle.  

With an Orioles team that has failed to live up to preseason expectations for another year, the hiring of Holub could be viewed as a final push from Elias to keep his job and maintain control of the team. But with a team continuing to disappoint year after year, Elias may be unable to see the forest from the trees here.  

After back to back strong showings in 2023 and 2024, the Orioles seemed like they deserved to be a feared team in the American League for years to come. That obviously failed to happen last season and this year has been more of the same. Despite hiring a new manager and a few splashy moves in the offseason, it just wasn’t enough to overcome the holes on the roster.     

It is also worth debating whether or not the Orioles had a need to shake up their organizational approach to their scouting department. The team has found a number of strong players that appeared to be primed and ready to make an impact in the big leagues. 

However, players like Heston Kjerstad and Colton Cowser have failed to ever take that next step in their development with the Orioles. Even Gunnar Henderson has seemingly hit a wall in his fourth full-season as a pro. The former Rookie of the Year has regressed across the board on offense to the point that there has been endless speculation to figure out what is wrong with him. 

Is that from a flaw in the team’s prospect development or has there been deeper concern at the core of the organization? The Orioles have been within reach of taking that next crucial step to contention for years, but as we’ve seen yet again in 2026, they continue to come up short. The talent has been there, but it has just not been enough. 

Even with Holub now in the scouting department, there remains one common denominator in the Orioles organization that will keep holding them back.
