Orioles shockingly cut bait on Grayson Rodriguez in trade for underrated Angels slugger

A stunner.

At the tail end of an extremely hectic Tuesday of roster maintenance and prospect protection, the Baltimore Orioles decided to wake haggard fans from their slumber by pushing the reset button on one of their rebuild's biggest names. Grayson Rodriguez, who ranked sixth in all of baseball on Baseball America's Top 100 Prospects list prior to both the 2022 and 2023 seasons, is headed to Anaheim after a lost season. In exchange, the Orioles will receive Angels thumper Taylor Ward in his walk year.

It's a jaw-dropper all around.

Rodriguez hasn't pitched in an MLB game since 2024, when he went 13-4 with a 3.86 ERA, striking out 130 men in 116 2/3 innings. It didn't quite look like what his pedigree had foretold, but it certainly represented a serviceable Year 2 after his rookie season had ended with an ALDS start on an ascendant Orioles team.

His sophomore campaign represented Baltimore's second straight sprint to a playoff berth, but Rodriguez didn't make it to October with the rest of his teammates; he saw 2024 cut short by a right lat/teres strain, then battled back vociferously to make it to the mound last season, only to fall victim to a right elbow debridement surgery all the same.

Now, his next start will come in a Halos uniform, and Angels GM Perry Minasian believes he'll be ready for spring training. It seems, based on this deal's sudden arrival, that Baltimore does not agree.

Orioles trade Grayson Rodriguez for Angels' Taylor Ward

On the flip side, the Orioles will bring in genuine thunder in the form of Ward, representing their second consecutive offseason that's begun with an attempt at a slugging corner outfielder (joining Tyler O'Neill). The jolt of this mid-slumber trade is certainly rivaled by the pop off Ward's bat; though he's only controllable for one season, it should be a good one, after he bashed 36 homers from the right side last year (good for a 116 OPS+). Ward is a competent, if unspectacular, defender, but hasn't had a below-average offensive season since 2020.

Seeing Rodriguez on the trade block is stunning enough. Seeing him dealt in exchange for someone who quite possibly could cameo in Baltimore's present and depart before their future in Ward? That's another layer of shocking.
