Orioles' series loss to the Braves sets up the ultimate "loser leaves town" matchup with the Tigers

The Baltimore Orioles and the Detroit Tigers are both teams that came into the season with high hopes of making the playoffs and contending for a World Series title. Both squads have had incredibly disappointing seasons so far, in part due to injury but also in part due to underperformance and regression from players they were relying on. In a normal season, the Orioles with their 51-55 record and the Tigers with their 50-56 record would be considered obvious trade deadline sellers without a prayer at a playoff spot. However, becuase the AL field is so weak, both the Orioles and the Tigers find themselves within four games of a playoff spot despite their losing records.

Now the two teams will face off in the last week before the trade deadline. The results of this series will heavily factor into each team's decision about whether to buy or sell at this deadline. A sweep in either direction basically puts the nail in the coffin for the team on the receiving end of the broom.

The Orioles season has reached a tipping point between buy and sell

The Orioles have a handful of players that playoff teams would be interested in getting their hands on. Taylor Ward is a name that every fanbase that needs a right-handed power bat believes would fit in seamlessly to their outfield. Trevor Rogers has been on fire after a rough stretch coming off the IL and could be one of the few pitchers traded at the deadline that might actually start a playoff game. Not to mention bullpen arms like Yennier Cano, Rico Garcia, and Andrew Kittredge would all be targets for contenders looking to strengthen their bullpen.

As of right now, sitting just 2.5 games back of a playoff spot, the Orioles are likely positioned to be buyers. Depending on how much pressure is coming down from ownership, there's an outside chance they might even be aggressive buyers.

However, if they lose this upcoming series to the Tigers, allowing Detoit to leap them in the standings and falling potentially 5.5 games out of a playoff spot that may just tilt the playoff odds enough to the point that the Orioles analytically driven front office just wouldn't be able to justify using valuabel resources to build up the 2026 Orioles and the equation would tip towards them being sad sellers.

The matchup to watch is the Wednesday afternoon game where Trevor Rogers will face off with Tarik Skubal. It could be either of these pitchers' final game with their current team depending on who wins that game. Both teams are facing pressure to give up and sell; both teams are looking for any reason to believe and buy. Whichever starter shows up bigger might make the decision for their team. Most baseball fans' money would be on Skubal, but over the last two months since Skubal returned from his injury, Rogers has been the better southpaw. Since the start of June, Rogers has an ERA of 1.80 with a FIP of 2.71 compared to Skubal's ERA of 2.70 and FIP of 3.19 in that same span.

This Orioles season has been disappointing, and they most likely will not make the playoffs, but this week's series against the Tigers should be treated like a playoff series where victory means the season continues and defeat means the season is over. High stakes for a game in July, but that's where both of these teams are.
