Baltimore Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said that he wanted to "run more" with the Orioles this season, but that has not been the case 43 games into the season. So far this season, the Orioles have only stolen 24 bases on 33 attempts, less than one attempt per game.
Baltimore has struggled to get on base, with a team on-base percentage of .299, which ranks 25th in baseball and well below the league average of .316. Getting on base would certainly lead to Hyde taking more risks with the Orioles' baserunners, but speed should be a part of their operation with runners on base to spark a desperately needed turnaround.
The Orioles' sixth-ranked prospect (per MLB Pipeline), Dylan Beavers, could be an answer to the team's basepath issues. Since 2023, Beavers has stolen 73 bases, including 15 in 37 games this season. Beavers' slash line has improved in Triple-A this year, hitting .301/.396/.412, allowing him to use his speed on the bases and elevate the Norfolk team.
Orioles could alter outfield plans as playoff chances decline
The issue for Beavers is that the Orioles' outfield is crowded, with Tyler O'Neill, Cedric Mullins, Ramon Laureano, and Heston Kjerstad currently occupying the major league slots. This group also includes Colton Cowser, though he's currently on the injured list and has resumed baseball activities in preparation for return.
Beavers would have to fight through a congested outfield to earn playing time at the major league level. Unless there is a trade, the Orioles might feel more comfortable letting him play every day in Triple-A. However, Beavers could add a presence on the basepaths that Baltimore hasn’t had.
While the outfield is jammed, Kjerstad and Laureano have struggled at the plate this season. With the Orioles' season in a downward spiral, they may be looking for a new corner outfield option. If Beavers’ bat translates to the major league level, the Orioles would gain an important aspect that Hyde wanted to see them utilize this season.
If the Orioles' season does not turn around, there may be some trade buzz about Mullins, as he is on an expiring contract. That would open the door for Beavers to come in and grasp center field for the near future. Beavers is close to being ready, and the longer the team struggles, the more likely that he will be seen at Camden Yards later in the season.
