While many Baltimore Orioles fans would like to see the team add another proven starter to the rotation, a recent prediction addresses the bullpen which is an area of the team that is often overlooked.
Bleacher Report identified one realistic move for every MLB team to make, and the one selected for the Orioles was to bring back left-handed reliever Danny Coulombe.
Orioles urged to bring back solid left-handed reliever in free agency
Left-handed help in the bullpen may not be the thing that jumps to the mind of Orioles fans when thinking about the team's key needs, but it certainly never hurts to have another reliable reliever in the mix.
It hurts even less when a team is familiar with that reliever as the Orioles saw firsthand how effective Coulombe can be when he was a member of the team in 2023 and 2024.
The 36-year-old veteran was rock solid for Baltimore those two seasons. He racked up 94 appearances across those two campaigns and had a 2.56 ERA in 81 innings pitched. He struck out 90 batters and walked just 17 in that span which is even more impressive when one considers he missed several months in 2024 after undergoing elbow surgery.
Baltimore opted not to bring him back in 2025 and he signed a one year, $3 million deal with the Minnesota Twins. He picked up right where he left off in 2024 and had a sterling 1.16 ERA in the first half.
Minnesota decided to trade him to the Texas Rangers at the deadline and Coulombe's numbers dropped off after the trade as his ERA in Texas was 5.25 across 15 appearances.
Framber Valdez and Zac Gallen may be much more shiny objects to go after, but the Orioles have to ensure they have enough depth in their bullpen next season.
The O's are going to be without closer Félix Bautista next season and they did bring in Ryan Helsley to fill in at closer, but with how poorly Helsley pitched with the New York Mets last season it is not a bad idea to get an extra arm or two just in case those struggles persist.
Plus, the Orioles do not seem all that intent on signing left-handed reliever Cionel Perez after the brutal 8.31 ERA he posted last season, so they may have a hole when it comes to lefty relievers.
A reunion with Coulombe would give Baltimore that extra veteran arm to give first-time manager Craig Albernaz a little more confidence in his late-inning arms. Bullpen depth is never a sexy area to address, but it can often make the difference in a long season.
