The Baltimore Orioles have been talking a big game this offseason, suggesting that they could be among the most active teams in free agency. We've been down this path before, and when the stage was set for the Orioles to be effectual, their inactivity led to them being one of the game's most disappointing teams in 2025. Seeing is believing when it comes to the Orioles' offseason plans, but ESPN's Jeff Passan may have provided a clue that inspires hope.

Talking through Pete Alonso's free agency, Passan suggests that the slugger isn't opposed to the idea of serving as a designated hitter next season. While that wouldn't rule out a potential return to the New York Mets, it also opens Alonso's theoretical suitors up to teams such as the Boston Red Sox, Cincinnati Reds, and the Orioles.

In making the connection to the Orioles, Passan floats out a scenario where the team can trade Ryan Mountcastle, and then Alonso splits reps with Samuel Basallo at designated hitter and first base.

Pete Alonso's arrival would check a major box for the Baltimore Orioles this offseason

It's no secret that the Orioles are making pitching the priority this offseason, with several needs across their starting rotation and in the bullpen. If the Orioles take a big swing this offseason, chances are it will be for a top-of-the-rotation starting pitcher.

That being said, they can't overlook the fact that their offense regressed last season. Their best hitter last season, Ryan O'Hearn, was traded at the MLB trade deadline, and Gunnar Henderson only had 17 home runs last year. Add in the injuries and regression from Adley Rutschman and Tyler O'Neill, and the Orioles' offense is facing some questions ahead of next season.

Similar to how the Orioles never quite replaced Corbin Burnes last offseason, they never really replaced Anthony Santander. O'Neill was their biggest attempt, and his contract suddenly looks like a disaster.

With Alonso being willing to serve as a designated hitter, that would be an easy fit for the Orioles. If not Alonso, the Orioles could look to add an offensive upgrade by finding a primary center fielder.
