MLB Pipeline released its top 30 prospects for the Baltimore Orioles recently. While there are a number of familiar faces is most familiar spots on the list, one notable change is that young right-handed pitcher Keeler Morfe, ranked No. 16 in the system last year, fell out of the top 30 entirely in this year's rankings.
Looking at his numbers, it is not too difficult to understand why. Morfe had a 7.48 ERA in 22 innings pitched last season in the minors. He issued a jarring 32 walks so it is clear that the command has a long way to go for the 19-year-old Venezuelan product.
Keeler Morfe needs to have a rebound year for Orioles in the worst way
The year prior, Morfe looked pretty solid. In 2024 in the minors, he had a solid 2.76 ERA in 33 innings and struck out 49 batters while walking just 17. There was hope that he could potentially earn a promotion to High-A in 2025 but his performance did not allow for that ultimately. He is still just a teenager so the Orioles should not overreact to just one bad year.
In addition, Morfe missed a couple of months with a finger injury so he may have been dealing with that and it may have impacted his ability to find the strike zone. That gives at least some helps
Morfe is fairly short at 5-foot-8 so there is a chance that he is not even fully done growing. Even with his small frame he has an impressive fastball that sits in the upper-90s so the potential is there. He has raw strikeout stuff and has displayed it with regularity. Now the question is can he refine that raw ability?
The Orioles clearly saw that raw potential in Morfe when they signed as an international free agent back in 2023 when he was just 16 years old. Patience is often the best practice with young arms like that so the Orioles should not pull the plug too soon on him. While Morfe was the biggest fall in the Orioles system, outfielder Nate George had the biggest jump as he moved up to the No. 3 ranking in the organization so there have certainly been some success stories.
There are no surprises as Samual Basallo and Dylan Beavers are the top two guys in the rankings and the Orioles are hoping 2026 can be a breakout campaign for both guys as the team looks to rebound from a rough 2025 campaign under new manager Craig Albernaz.
