The Baltimore Orioles never go too long without acquiring fresh bullpen arms. This time, they made a deal with the Athletics, exchanging cash for right-handed relief pitcher Eduarniel Núñez. Núñez's claim to fame was being a part of the package the Padres sent to the Athletics to get Mason Miller. After a poor major league stint last year following the trade and a bad start to his minor league season this year, the Athletics decided they had seen enough of Núñez and designated him for assignment, where the Orioles jumped in with their cash offer.
The Orioles have an interesting infatuation with former Padres. Last year, they traded for six Padres prospects, and in the past year, they claimed former Padres prospects, Jose Espada and Jayvien Sandridge. Either they're in lockstep with the Padres front office and like the same guys, or they think there is something developmentally the Padres aren't doing that they can capitalize on. Either way, it will be interesting to see what the Orioles do with Núñez, who, despite having interesting raw stuff, has been wild and ineffective for about a calendar year now.
To make room for Núñez, the Orioles DFA'd Christian Roa, who they had just barely claimed five days ago from the Minnesota Twins. They liked Roa enough to claim him, so they'll hope that they can sneak him through waivers, but if they can't, they'll chalk that up to the game. It wouldn't be at all surprising if someone claims Roa and then tries to sneak him through their own waivers, only for the Orioles to claim him again and DFA Núñez to make room for him. That's just the game the Orioles are always playing to try to get as many interesting arms into the organization as possible, and if a couple get away in the process, they'll live with it.
Orioles top prospect Nate George is going to miss some time
Mike Elias announced that Nate George was going on the IL with an unspecified illness and added that it would "be a while" before he would return. That's an interesting update because it's casual enough not to seem like it's going to be a Heston Kjerstadesque season-ending illness, but for the illness to be serious enough for Elias to get out in front, that George would be out more than the minimum seven days, it must be at least be more serious than the typical flu. This is worth keeping an eye on if George still isn't back after a couple of weeks.
As far as George's overall development, this shouldn't be too big a setback. He's already ahead of schedule playing at High-A as a teenager, so if the result of this injury is that he doesn't reach Double-A until the end of the year, that's not the end of the world.
Grayson Rodriguez will try to make the Orioles look foolish in his season debut
Grayson Rodriguez is set to pitch in the big leagues for the first time since July of 2024. This will be interesting to watch because at least a portion of the reasoning behind the Taylor Ward for Grayson Rodriguez trade was that Rodriguez wasn't going to be able to help the Orioles in the short term, which made it ok for them to give up on him in the long term. This idea seemed vindicated when Rodriguez didn't even make it out of spring training healthy.
Rodriguez made a pair of rehab starts, and now the Angels are throwing him in the deep end of the pool, having him make his season debut against the Dodgers. If he comes back and looks like the pitcher the Orioles always hoped he'd be, that trade is going to be hard to stomach, no matter how good Taylor Ward's on-base percentage is.
