Make no mistake about it: the Baltimore Orioles getting swept by the Red Sox was embarrassing. Sure, the Orioles are not have a good season and we have grown to accept that, but losing four straight games including three by just one run to a division rival is a special kind of pain. If it is any consolation, Baltimore's misery at the hands of one AL East rival may have caused even more misery with another division contender.
While it sucks that the Orioles got swept, there was not any expectation that they could turn things around and make the playoffs this season. However, the Red Sox wins come in the middle of a tough battle in the AL Wild Card race with the Yankees. Suffice it to say, New York fans are not having a great time with Boston having won four straight games period, let along courtesy of the Orioles.
Yankees fans are melting down which soothes the sting after Orioles swept by Boston
Again, it would have been much better if Baltimore had swept the Red Sox and no one should be arguing otherwise. Bostonian tears taste just as good, if not better than Yankee fans' tears and wins are strictly better than losses. However, seeing New York fans melt down is a nice consolation prize.
Some Yankees fans went for the standard "nice job a**holes" in the Orioles mentions which lacked creativity, but got the point across. Others decided to go full tinfoil hat conspiracy theorist and claim that Baltimore lost on purpose and need to be investigated. Regardless of whether they were serious or not, that is objectively funny. Even our friends at Talkin' Yanks got in on the fun and complained that Baltimore couldn't even win one game like what happened in the Yankees' series against the Red Sox.
Again, we all understand where this vitriol is coming from and it is very relatable. The Yankees have won five straight games which, under normal circumstances, would have been enough to overtake Boston in the Wild Card standings. Instead, New York is still looking up at their biggest rival in the standings with their playoff hopes on the line.
In an ideal world, both the Red Sox AND Yankees would be cratering right now. However, it does feel at least a little better that Baltimore gets to see at least one of them suffering right now for a change.
