Orioles complete Adley Rutschman trade by robbing Red Sox of another top prospect

While the battle of WAR rages on across baseball, specifically when it comes to the MVP races in both the American League and National League (and Rookie of the Year), the Baltimore Orioles were simply waiting for resolution to the Adley Rutschman trade.

Things escalated quickly between the Orioles and Boston Red Sox on deadline, considering intial rumors pointed to the New York Yankees being the suitor for Rutschman. Instead, it was the Red Sox who offered a packaged of Carlos Narváez, Anthony Eyanson, Kyson Witherspoon, and Enddy Azocar.

There was confusion surrounding the fifth prospect in the deal. Initially, reports suggested the Orioles would also be netting outfield prospect Harold Rivas in the deal with the Red Sox. Then, once the trade was finalized, it turned out to be a player to be named later.

The trade has since been finalized, and as it turns out, Rivas is indeed the final prospect headed to the Orioles.

Rivas was the No. 13 prospect in the Boston's system, according to MLB Pipeline. In making the jump to Baltimore's system, Rivas becomes the No. 26 prospect in their system. Considering that the deal with the Red Sox included several top prospects, it's no surprise that Rivas grades toward the bottom of the Orioles' system.

The important thing to note is that Rivas is only 18 years old, and made his professional debut last year. He's still several years away from reaching the majors, and it may not happen until 2030 at the earliest. He's the typical low-level lottery ticket that is included at the backend of trades like this, and if you're the Orioles, might as well take a flier when you have the opportunity to do so.

After spending last year in the Dominican Summer League, Rivas was moved up to the Rookie Complex League this year, but is still waiting for the offense to click. He sports an OPS of .773 through 198 plate appearances. The upside is his speed, considering he notched 23 steals in 46 games.

With Rivas' arrival, the book closes on the Rutschman trade. As for what's next for the Orioles, it's hard to pinpoint exactly what the plan is, considering everything Mike Elias has done until this point has backfired.
