Orioles are finally seeing signs of life from young stars who hold the keys to the future

It's about time.

The Baltimore Orioles came into the 2026 season relying on very young players to play key positions, and one of the most concerning early-season trends was the fact that these young players looked overwhelmed at the plate. Seeing a group of prospects all looking similarly bewildered at the plate raises uncomfortable questions about the Orioles' ability to coach and develop their prospects.

Fortunately for the Orioles, three of their young former prospects appear to have turned a corner and are getting hot at the plate just when their team needs it the most.

22 games into the season was rock bottom for Coby Mayo, Dylan Beavers, and Samuel Basallo. Whether that's a coincidence or something else, at the 22-game mark, all three of those players had their worst OPS since the first week of the season.

  • Mayo: .148/.258/.185, 0 HR, 4 RBI, 8 BB, 18 K (17 G)
  • Beavers: .212/.300/.288, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 7 BB, 15 K (17 G)
  • Basallo: .140/.234/.298, 3 HR, 4 RBI, 7 BB, 17 K (16 G)

Those are not the stat lines of productive everyday players. You could maybe get away with what Beavers was doing if you were a gold glove center fielder or shortstop, but that's not what Beavers is. No amount of defense could make up for what Mayo and Basallo were doing at the plate.

These weren't fringe guys on the roster; the Orioles were relying on all of them to be pretty much everyday players. In the second game of the season, those three hit in the five, six, and seven spots, that's the heart of the order. Having three bats you hoped would give you middle-of-the-order production turned into black holes in the lineup, really hurting the team's ability to have extended rallies and create consistent offense.

Orioles may have gotten the offensive boost they've been searching for

With all three struggling, the Orioles' offense just wasn't what they'd hoped for, and it was reflected in their disappointing record. If these struggles had continued, they would have had to make some difficult decisions about the division of playing time. That's where the good news comes in.

Since the 22nd game of the season, all three of Mayo, Beavers, and Basallo have come to life at the plate. If you look at their season-long stat lines, those still don't look impressive because of the hole they all put themselves in, but since that 22nd game, here is what each of them looks like:

  • Mayo: .333/.333/1.000, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 0 BB, 3 K (6 G)
  • Beavers: .333/.333/.611, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 0 BB, 2 K (4 G)
  • Basallo: .563/.632/1.000, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 3 BB, 2 K (5 G)

It's a small sample size, but they've all been awesome for a week now. Basallo has been so good that his full season actually does look pretty good now, which is crazy considering where they were a week ago.

These numbers won't hold all season. You'd assume that at some point Mayo and Beavers have to walk. Jokes aside, if these three can settle in and be the hitters they were each supposed to be for the rest of the season, that would change the trajectory of this Orioles team that has been scratching and clawing to keep their head above water this season with so many of their important players scuffling.
