The Baltimore Orioles signed former Atlanta Brave and two-time World Series Champion Charlie Morton on Friday night. Jon Paul Morosi's comments following the signing will have Orioles fans riled up.
Speaking of the Morton deal, Morosi said on MLB Network that “This does, as CY documented, complete this group of Orioles starters to begin the season”. Morosi is adamant that the Orioles will be out on the likes of Jack Flaherty and Nick Pivetta following the signing of Morton.
The Orioles rotation is deep with options, many of them being in their pre-arbitration and arbitration years. Morton likely fills the hole that Burnes left with the intention that former top prospect Grayson Rodriguez will take a larger step to be the team's go-to guy moving forward.
Morosi’s comments are concerning, if the Orioles are truly done with any rotation additions this winter. Baltimore has the ability to make another lower-tier move before spring training but the plans do not look clear at this time.
If Jon Morosi is right, the Orioles' rotation might already be finalized for 2025
The Baltimore Orioles could enter the 2025 season with plenty of options for their pitching staff. With the addition of Morton, they were able to add a playoff tested veteran to the rotation. With many of their pitchers being young and unproven in the postseason, Morton is a welcome addition to the culture of the staff.
Morton is a proven 30-start pitcher coming to Baltimore. Due to the injuries to John Means in recent seasons, Morton will fill his role and give reliable depth to the Orioles, who are still searching for a big splash at the front end of the rotation.
The options are there for Baltimore. Four of the five starters that we previously mentioned as potential targets are still available. Although Corbin Burnes departed for the Arizona Diamondbacks, top-end, playoff-proven starters are still on the market for a new home. Baltimore could pair Morton with one of the other options to solidify a rotation for a postseason hunting team.
The key point for Baltimore fans to hear from Morosi is that this is just to begin the season. He later mentions they could take a bigger swing at a starter at the trade deadline before the final push of 2025. Baltimore missed out on a couple trade targets this past season as the White Sox chose to hold Garrett Crotchet until the offseason and the Detroit Tigers kept Tarik Skubal for their eventual playoff appearance.
Depending on how teams begin their 2025 season there will be some strong options for a late season rental for the Orioles to hunt. Pitchers like Luis Castillo of the Seattle Mariners will be a long-term trade option and will have a higher price tag than a Dylan Cease type arm, which will be a single season rental. As Morosi mentioned fans should expect the Orioles to be active as the deadline approaches to put the team over the playoff line for a third consecutive season, the first time for the organization since 1969-1971.
This should give hope to the Baltimore faithful as the team looks to load up at the deadline and make a push for a potential ace later this year.
