Baltimore Orioles President of Baseball Operations Mike Elias told the media on Saturday, coming off a win against the Nationals, that the Orioles were very much in the mindset of "going for it" in 2026. The team responded by losing four straight games to fall to a season-worst eight games under .500, five games out of a Wild Card spot. Elias did hedge his aggressive quote by saying that he was going to do "what is right" for the franchise at the deadline, basically indicating that he would sell if he had to.
Based on Elias' track record of playing it safe at every deadline, it seemed like the ill-timed four-game losing streak might have pushed the Orioles from the buyers category into the sellers. However, at the tail end of Bob Nightengale's Sunday article, he provided a series of bullet-point nuggets of rumors going around the league, and one of those nuggets was about Elias and the Orioles. Here is the bullet point:
"The Baltimore Orioles, who looked like a team that would take off and become a juggernaut when they won 101 games in 2023, now have GM Mike Elias telling teams he’s willing to move prospects at the trade deadline as they desperately try to become relevant again."
The Orioles are reportedly trying to make something happen at this year's trade deadline
It should be stated that just becuase a source told Bob Nightengale that Mike Elias was looking to move prospects at this deadline doesn't mean that is going to happen. Baseball executives talk about a lot of stuff that doesn't end up happening. However, assuming that Nightengale's sources are good, there is a lot that is interesting about this bullet point.
One is that, with the frequency of these kinds of Nightengale rumor updates, if these were old rumors they would have cropped up in an earlier article. This coming out on Sunday would lead you to believe that Elias has been talking about moving prospects with teams recently.
Assuming that Nightengale is being precise in his writing, it's also interesting to see both "teams" and "prospects" being pluralized. Taking Nightengale at his word, this means that the Orioles are canvassing the league for trade partners and the packages they are offering are potentially large (which makes sense as they generally seem to prefer to send out a large package of lower-ranked prospects vs one highly regarded player).
The final thing that is interesting/concerning about this bullet point is that Nightengale editorialized about the Orioles being desperate. Bob Nightengale does not have an axe to grind with the Orioles. If he is calling them desperate, that is likely becuase that is how they are being described to him by his sources.
The Orioles being "desperate" is exciting but worrisome. Exciting in the sense that part of what has held this Orioles team back over the last few years is that they weren't desperate enough. At every chance, they convinced themselves they were fine without the big move and that their core was "good enough". Now, as they look down the barrel of back-to-back losing seasons, a little desperation is warranted, and it will be interesting to see if Elias can turn that desperation into an impact player at this deadline.
Worrisome in the sense that Mike Elias in "win-now mode" is a little scary. In his first offseason under David Rubenstein, Elias increased the Orioles payroll by over $70 million and made the team much worse. If Elias is frantically trying to hit a home run at this deadline, there's a decent chance he could make a move that immediately blows up in his face.
Elias has been the Orioles GM/POBO since 2018, and for the vast majority of that time, he's had one of the safest jobs in baseball. Nobody has really seen him with his back against the wall. It'll be interesting to see how he handles it. If he pushes in a bunch of chips and brings in a big-time piece that gets the Orioles to the playoffs, he could preserve his job maybe for multiple years. If he gets fleeced and the Orioles hand over big prospects for players that don't move the needle, he'll basically have just dug his own grave.
